Discover Tavernelle: holiday apartment in Tavernelle amid village history and the Taverone

Tavernelle is a historic village extending along a single street. Buildings dating mainly from the 15th century line this route; arcades, galleries and sandstone structures shape the appearance of the village. The village is home to a fortified tower house built by Alfonso Saffi in 1516.

Tavernelle between village history and the Via del Sale

The historic setting also includes the Church of San Rocco. It dates from the 16th century, was built by the Antonetti family and rebuilt in 1601. The history of the name also points to the old route: Tavernelle probably takes its name from the numerous taverns that welcomed travellers along the ancient Via del Sale.

Tavernelle lies along the Via del Sale, also known as the Via di Linari, which connects the Val di Magra with the Passo del Lagastrello. For orientation on site: Tavernelle is about 6 km from Licciana and can be reached via the SP74 del Lagastrello.

Hikes and trails along the Taverone

Several trails starting in Tavernelle offer different experiences. Stage 11 of the Lunigiana Trekking route leads from Tavernelle to Comano Castello, crosses the Taverone near Tavernelle and then climbs uphill towards Catognano. An easy hike leads from Tavernelle to Apella along a simple trail. This trail is part of the “Lunigiana Trekking” network and was renamed “Il Sentiero della Resistenza”.

The partisan hike “Ièn andà ai monti” began in the borgo of Tavernelle, headed towards Apella and passed through Taponecco. The “Rif. Sarzana – Monte Sillara – Rif. Lagoni” route runs through the Taverone Valley from Tavernelle and climbs through chestnut woods, clearings and then beech forests.

Waterhole, mill and stone bridge

The landscape along the Taverone can be explored in shorter sections. After about 15 minutes, the river narrows near Tavernelle and forms a beautiful waterhole. Hiking along the Taverone near Tavernelle also reveals an old mill; the route leads to a picturesque stone bridge.

Medieval market and chestnut flour

At the end of July, the village comes alive with the medieval market. In the centre, the Gradile was put back into operation as part of an initiative held for the second consecutive year, in order to collect chestnuts, dry them traditionally and produce chestnut flour.

Choosing between the Apella route and the Taverone Valley

For planning your day, the routes from Tavernelle offer different options. The route to Apella is an easy hike along a simple trail, while Stage 11 climbs uphill towards Catognano after crossing the Taverone near Tavernelle. As a result, planning a hiking day on the Apella route differs from planning one on the uphill stage, even though both routes begin in Tavernelle.
