Holiday Apartment in Mommio: Nature, Culture and Remembrance
Mommio combines distinctive natural formations with a multifaceted local history. The Mommio stream flows near the Agriturismo Restì and rises at Cima Belfiore at an altitude of 1,810 metres. The story of the landscape therefore does not begin only at the sights: the watercourse and its source already give the surrounding area a distinct alpine character.
Arrival and Holiday Focus
The access route to the Agriturismo Restì is a practical factor when choosing a holiday apartment in Mommio. After Fivizzano, a side road branches off towards Mommio in the direction of Passo del Cerreto. The Agriturismo Restì can be reached via the centre of Mommio and then along approximately 4.5 kilometres of unpaved road.
The Marmitte dei Giganti on the Mommio Stream
The Marmitte dei Giganti are among the most impressive landscape formations. The access route leads from the Agriturismo Restì to a bridge over the Mommio stream. The marmitte are spherical forms created by river erosion, approximately one metre deep and around ten metres wide. They were carved into the rock by water and the abrasive action of gravel and are considered formations of glacial origin. For a stay in a holiday apartment in Mommio, this creates a particularly vivid connection with nature: geology is not abstract, but visible in a specific rock formation.
Church, Art and Village Square
The village centre also offers themes for a varied day of holiday. The Chiesa di San Martino was first documented at the end of the 13th century as being subordinate to the Pieve di Vendaso. Inside, it preserves paintings by Luigi Battistini from Fivizzano. These include a lunette in the presbytery depicting Saint Martin handing his cloak to a poor man. The Monumento ai caduti di Mommio stands in the centre of the village square at the end of Via Bompizzo.
Remembrance as Part of the Village
In May 1944, Mommio was the site of a Nazi-fascist massacre in which 22 people were killed. Six of them were residents of Mommio; during the events in the municipality of Fivizzano, 70 of the village’s 72 houses were mined or set on fire. A “Sentiero della Memoria” was created in the centre of Mommio. These places and testimonies give travel planning a serious historical dimension and make clear that a stay in Mommio, alongside nature and art, also involves a conscious engagement with the past.
Information Centre at the Agriturismo Restì
The Appennino Tosco-Emiliano National Park established an information centre at the Agriturismo Restì in Mommio, in the municipality of Fivizzano. Together with the stream, access to the Marmitte dei Giganti and the cultural sites in the village centre, this place forms a diverse range of themes for planning your own trip. Accommodation in Mommio is particularly worth considering if you would like to view natural formations, village history and places of remembrance not separately, but as different focal points of your journey.
