Discover Codiponte – Pieve, Borgo and Bridge

Codiponte combines sacred architecture, the history of a fortified village and bridge architecture with connections to the landscape in the wider surrounding area. The village is home to the Pieve di Codiponte, the upper Borgo and the Codiponte Bridge. The surrounding area includes mountains, peaks, museums, a castle and a palace. The architecture of the village and the landscape of Lunigiana are located on different spatial levels.

Pieve and Borgo di Codiponte

The Pieve di Codiponte has a Latin basilica floor plan with three naves. Columns with capitals dating from the 12th century separate the naves; the capitals are decorated with symbolic and theological representations. The Pieve also contains a pre-Romanesque, hexagonal baptismal font from the 8th century. Those interested in sacred architecture can examine the floor plan, capitals and baptismal font at the Pieve. The dates range from the 8th to the 12th century.

The upper part of the Borgo di Codiponte is fortified and preserves the ruins of a castle. The castle ruins can be reached from the lower part of the village. Further scattered ruins in the upper part of the hill of Borgo di Codiponte indicate an earlier defensive complex that probably included a small church. The accessible castle ruins can be included in a visit to the village from the lower part.

The Codiponte Bridge and its distinctive details

The Codiponte Bridge has three humpback arches along its entire length. In the middle of the bridge there is a representation featuring a carved coat of arms of Pisa. When examining bridge architecture, attention is drawn to the three arches spanning the entire length and to the coat of arms in the middle.

Mountains and regional park in the wider surrounding area

The northwestern part of the Apuan Alps Regional Park extends into Lunigiana on the side of the Magra River basin in the municipalities of Casola in Lunigiana, Fivizzano and Fosdinovo. The surrounding area of Codiponte also includes Monte Pizzo d'Uccello, Monte Pisanino, Monte Sagro and Pizzo Maggiore. Here, the landscape of Lunigiana extends from the Magra basin to the mountains and peaks around Codiponte.
