Culture, Historic Centre and Nativity Traditions in Pallerone

Pallerone combines a fortified historic centre, sacred architectural heritage and unusual nativity traditions with a route towards the Apennines. The medieval settlement lies on an important route from the Abbey of San Caprasio in Aulla to the mountains of the Tusco-Emilian Apennines. Verdentro is the original fortified historic centre of Pallerone. Its circular layout follows the ring of walls of Pallerone Castle. Thus, the townscape brings together the fortified settlement structure, ecclesiastical history and connection to the Malaspina Castle.

The Mechanical Nativity Scene in the Old Castle Tower

The preserved tower of the old castle in Pallerone houses the mechanical nativity scene Presepe Meccanico di Pallerone, which presents a special display. In about seven minutes, it shows the transition from daylight through sunset and a star-filled night to dawn. The sequence combines the historic castle tower with a precisely structured progression over time. The duration of about seven minutes makes the nativity scene easy to plan as a separate item alongside other impressions from the historic centre.

Church, Verdentro and Malaspina

The church is known as Sant’Antonio, but was originally dedicated to San Tommaso Becket di Canterbury. Its history and architecture are connected with the Malaspina Castle and the circular Verdentro, whose shape follows the ring of walls of Pallerone Castle. The current name and the original dedication preserve two different historical references relating to the same church.

The Castello Malaspina di Pallerone

The Castello Malaspina di Pallerone is a luxurious 17th-century residence in the centre of Pallerone’s medieval settlement. The great hall contains 17th-century frescoes probably attributed to Stefano Lemmi. A chapel dedicated to San Gaetano Thiene has also been preserved there. Dating the castle and the frescoes to the 17th century places the residence and its furnishings in the same period.

Cycling Tour and Seasonal Townscapes

The 71-kilometre MC4-N010 cycling tour passes through Pallerone twice. The distance of 71 kilometres helps you plan the cycling day as a separate focus alongside the town’s cultural and historical themes. Those wishing to combine cycling and culture can link the route with a visit to Verdentro and the Castello.

During the Christmas holidays, numerous family nativity scenes are displayed in Pallerone’s historic centre, in Verdentro and in the Borgo settecentesco along a specially designated route, and are included in a competition. The seasonal route covers several historic areas of the town. The meeting point for the guided tour is at the entrance to the Castello Malaspina di Pallerone, Piazza Castello 7, Pallerone (MS). The Christmas holidays give this route its own timeframe and complement the permanent cultural and historical themes of the church, Verdentro and castle.
