Farnocchia combines Monte Gabberi with impressive traces of local history and a lively summer tradition. The Church of San Michele Arcangelo, Farnocchia Castle and the Filarmonica di Santa Cecilia offer different historical perspectives. When choosing a holiday apartment in Farnocchia, you can therefore consider whether your days should focus mainly on mountain hikes, culture or a mixture of both.

Monte Gabberi and trails through the mountain landscape

Monte Gabberi is 1,108 metres high and is considered a natural terrace overlooking the sea. From there, the view stretches from the Gulf of La Spezia past Livorno to the island of Gorgona. Monte Gabberi can be reached on foot from Farnocchia in 40 to 50 minutes.

Several trails also make Farnocchia interesting for different day plans. CAI Trail 114 connects Valdicastello, Sant’Anna, the Foce di Farnocchia, Farnocchia and Culerchia near Le Mulina. A circular hike begins in Farnocchia, leads via Monte Gabberi and the Foce di Farnocchia to Monte Lieto, and returns to Farnocchia. This loop is rated difficulty level E and takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes. CAI Trail 114A begins in Farnocchia at the turnoff near the Marginetta di Cima alle Selve, leads via Pietralunga on Monte Gabberi and continues to Il Callare. The different routes and estimated times help you adapt your day plan to your group and the hiking pace you prefer.

History and sacred art in Farnocchia

The Church of San Michele Arcangelo in Farnocchia is believed to date from before the year 1000. It has five altars decorated with multicoloured inlaid marble. The church also houses a 1497 ciborium by Lorenzo Stagi, which is now used as a baptismal font. The individual details invite you to combine a day of hiking with a peaceful cultural visit.

Farnocchia Castle is thought to have stood between the hamlets of Broto, Le Piastre and Cerro. In 1202, Lucca destroyed it because of its loyalty to the Cattani and rebuilt it almost immediately. In 1349, silver lead and antimony were mined at Bottino and Cuor della Vena in the municipality of Farnocchia. The Filarmonica di Santa Cecilia was founded in Farnocchia in 1850.

Summer village life and orientation

The Sagra del Magnifico Tordello takes place every year in Farnocchia during almost the entire summer. It adds a seasonal highlight to the village’s hiking and cultural attractions and may play a role in planning the timing of your stay.

Farnocchia can be accessed by car or on foot. The Farnocchia–Sant’Anna route is part of the Sentieri Alta Versilia. The Museo Storico della Resistenza di Sant’Anna di Stazzema is located in the building of the former primary school in the village of Sant’Anna di Stazzema, near the church square at Via Coletti 22. The same route from Farnocchia can be taken to Sant’Anna di Stazzema.
