Holiday apartment in Sillano between churches, lake and nature

Sillano combines impressive evidence of its history with a varied landscape. Its former role as a transport link adds a historical perspective to the churches, while the lake and nature reserve shape the surrounding landscape.

Churches and history in Sillano

Construction work on the Oratory of Chiesa del Carmine began on 26 March 1580. The present building preserves almost all of its original sandstone elements. These include cornerstones, cornices, door and window surrounds, and lintels. Chiesa del Carmine is also the second-oldest church in Sillano Giuncugnano.

Chiesa della Madonna del Ponte tells a different story, one closely connected with the town. The people of Sillano completed its construction within just three years. The church was built at the place where, according to tradition, a painting of the Madonna with San Nicolao and San Biagio shed tears for several days on 6 August 1730.

The village’s former importance is also present in the character of Sillano: in the Middle Ages, Sillano was a strategic transport link. For a long time, the town was one of the few passes connecting central Italy with northern Italy. An ancient Latin inscription is also still visible inside the church of S.Bartolomeo.

The Fiera di Sant’Antonio includes a procession through the streets of Sillano. The Fiera takes place on the Sunday after the feast day of Saint Anthony of Padua on 13 June. The wider regional area around Sillano also contains the Cava Museo museum, the Palazzo Cybo Malaspina palace, the Galleria d'Arte "Il Borgo" museum and the Palazzo Binelli palace. The museums and palaces in the wider regional area create a different emphasis from the churches in Sillano.

For those interested in culture, Sillano brings together architectural history, a traditional religious event, a Latin inscription and the village’s former role as a transport link.
