Discover Aquilea: Holiday Apartment, Cuisine and History

Aquilea is located in the Morian Hills. The local cuisine, a community park next to the church, and historical traces in Castellaccio near Aquilea are among the defining features of the place.

Local Cuisine and Zuppa di Aquilea

Only locally grown agricultural ingredients are used for Zuppa di Aquilea. These include the red Lucca bean, black curly kale from Lucca, whose Italian name is “braschetta” lucchese, and wild field herbs. Thus, alongside its Italian name, the black kale also bears a name explicitly associated with Lucca.

Depending on the season, the variety of field herbs can include up to 40 different species and varieties. Zuppa di Aquilea therefore combines specific ingredients from local agriculture with a seasonally possible range of herbs. The soup remains closely connected in its composition to the agricultural products of the area.

The Sagra della Zuppa in Aquilea

The Sagra della Zuppa di Aquilea is a traditional local festival featuring a communal meal based on recipes typical of the region. During the Sagra, food stalls offer Lucchese soup and other specialties. The festival therefore includes both the shared meal and the additional dishes served at the food stalls.

Community Park and San Leonardo

Next to the church in Aquilea is an equipped community park covering an area of 20,000 m². Its precise size makes the park a clearly defined part of the local landscape, without specifying any additional uses or facilities beyond that.

In Castellaccio near Aquilea stand the remains of the old church of San Leonardo. The surviving building probably dates from the 12th century. This historical trace is therefore associated with a specific church building and a cautiously classified date.

Palaces and Museum in the Surrounding Area

The Villa Reale palace is located in the immediate vicinity of Aquilea. The Villa Mansi palace, the Gabinetto di Storia Naturale museum, and the Santini Palace are also located in the surrounding area. The four destinations lie around Aquilea and complement the historical associations of the place with palaces and a museum.

Mountains in the Immediate and Wider Surroundings

Mount M. Moraglio is located in the immediate vicinity of Aquilea. The summit of Monte Crocefisso is located in the surrounding area of Aquilea. In the wider regional surroundings are Monte Matanna and Mount monte Procinto.

Castellaccio Between Remembrance and Panorama

On the occasion of the 74th anniversary of the Battle of Castellaccio di Aquilea, the village committee organized a historical and cultural walk at Castellaccio di Aquilea on September 22. The aim was to present the history of Castellaccio from the year 1100 to the present day, including the events of September 24, 1944. The walk thus focused on a specific historical period and a specific event within the history of the place.

A route along the Gothic Line begins at the ruins of Castellaccio di Aquilea. From there, there is a panorama over the plain of Lucca and the Serchio Valley. The start at the ruins and the view over both landscapes are part of the same route described.
