In Colognole and its surroundings, the starting points for a stay range from protected nature and aqueduct structures to sacred art and local events.

Natural environment and aqueduct at the springs of Colognole

The local protected area of special interest “Sorgenti di Colognole” extends in the southwest of the municipality of Collesalvetti, directly outside the settlement of Colognole. The holm oak forest at the springs of Colognole forms the setting for the structures of the Colognole Aqueduct. The springs, forest and aqueduct are therefore linked by a shared local context. This means that attention moves in a short thematic sequence from the springs and forest to the aqueduct structures.

Hiking between Mediterranean scrub and holm oaks

The guided hike to the Colognole Aqueduct is an easy circular route in the Colognole area through Mediterranean scrub and among oaks and centuries-old holm oaks; the route follows CAI trails 199, 125, 125P and 119. The landscape along the route is therefore shaped not only by the aqueduct, but also by several named vegetation areas. When choosing a holiday apartment in Colognole, three documented themes of the area are thus readily accessible: the natural environment with the “Sorgenti di Colognole” protected area, the springs, the holm oak forest and the aqueduct structures; the sacred objects – reliquary and chalice – associated with the Church of Santi Pietro e Paolo; and the Sagra del Cinghiale, with its 34th edition in 2024 and its two event periods in 2026.

Church and sacred artefacts from Colognole

The Church of Santi Pietro e Paolo is located at Piazza Unione 4 in Colognole; on feast days, a religious service is held there at 9:30 a.m. The time is expressly tied to feast days and is not listed as a daily appointment. The Museo diocesano preserves a reliquary of Santa Croce from this church. In addition, in 1599, the Pisan nobleman Giulio Gualandi commissioned a chalice made of silver-plated and gilded metal for the Church of Santi Pietro e Paolo in Colognole. The reliquary and chalice therefore represent two different sacred objects with a direct connection to the same church. In the case of the chalice, the commissioner, year and material are also documented. Alongside nature and hiking, these three local and cultural connections give Colognole a sacred and art-historical dimension.

In 2026, the Sagra took place at the “Carlo Lenzi” Area Polivalente in Colognole from 30 July 2026 to 2 August 2026 and from 5 August 2026 to 9 August 2026.
