Roman traces around Il Casone

Around Il Casone, Roman harbour finds, a museum and preserved ruins come together. The MAPS Museum displays archaeological finds from the ancient Roman harbour. It is housed in a hydraulic building from the early 20th century, from which there is a view over the Padule di Scarlino. The ruins of several Roman-era smelting works have also been preserved in Località Casone. Those interested in culture will therefore find both the museum’s harbour archaeology and visible ruins in the local area.

Maquis, protected areas and coves

The Le Bandite di Scarlino nature reserve covers almost 9,000 hectares of Mediterranean maquis. The protected area includes the Costiere di Scarlino protected natural area and a wildlife oasis. Cala Martina is located in the Le Bandite di Scarlino nature reserve. Cala Violina is known for its tiny quartz grains of different shapes, which produce a sound reminiscent of a violin when stepped on. When approaching Cala Violina on foot, this acoustic characteristic of the ground becomes immediately perceptible underfoot.

Cycling excursions in the Pecora Basin

Two cycling excursions in the Pecora Basin follow different routes. A cycling excursion exploring the basin of the Pecora River follows the left bank after the bridge at Casone, near the airfield. Another cycling excursion in the Pecora River basin crosses river embankments and unpaved paths, with a small section on paved roads. Route planning must therefore take into account both the section after the bridge at Casone and the different road surfaces in the Pecora Basin. For a cycling excursion, the choice between following the riverbank and using varying surfaces is therefore specifically determined by these two routes. The proximity of the airfield marks the route along the left bank.

Circular route and paths to Cala Martina and Cala Violina

Cala Martina is part of an approximately 15-kilometre circular cycling route that also includes Cala Violina. Cala Martina can also be reached by sea from La Marina di Scarlino in Puntone. Cala Violina is accessible exclusively on foot or by bicycle. The circular route therefore connects both coves along a cycling route, while Cala Martina is additionally accessible from the water. When planning a visit to the two destinations, the circular cycling route, the sea route from Puntone and access on foot or by bicycle therefore differ. The approximate length gives the circular route a clear planning framework for visiting both coves.

Walk in the Padule di Scarlino

As part of the announced event, a free walk through the Padule di Scarlino was possible via footbridges and improved paths.
