Chiarone Scalo: Holiday Apartment for the Coast, WWF Oasis and Maremma

Chiarone Scalo lies in an area where the coast, wetlands, cycling routes, historic buildings, art and Maremma cuisine come together. Specific points of interest include the dunes of Chiarone, the WWF Oasis Lago di Burano, the Torre di Buranaccio, the Palazzo del Chiarone and the Giardino dei Tarocchi in Garavicchio.

Coast and WWF Oasis Lago di Burano

Le Dune del Chiarone is a flat coastal area protected by a dune system. The WWF Oasis Lago di Burano lies in the southern Maremma between Ansedonia and Chiarone, in the municipality of Capalbio. Ultimaspiaggia is a beach resort in Località Chiarone Marina in Capalbio; its light-coloured sand extends to the nature reserve and the WWF Oasis Lago di Burano. The light-coloured sand, the dune and the wetland form distinct landscape elements of the same coastal area.

The nature trail on the dune

The nature trail of the WWF Oasis Lago di Burano runs along the dune and includes seven observation points, including six observation huts and an observation tower. The six huts and the tower distribute wildlife observation across several points along the dune. For day planning, this creates a clear sequence of individual observation stops along the dune trail rather than a single short stop. A day in nature can be structured around these individual observation stops.

Cycling routes through Chiarone Scalo

The “Itinerario tra Orbetello e la Costa d’Argento” cycling route reaches Chiarone Scalo and passes through the railway underpass to the SP Litoranea. Along this route, the itinerary runs beside the sea and Lago di Burano. On the “Capalbio e i tesori della Costa d'Argento” route, a new underpass in Chiarone Scalo leads back to the Litoranea provincial road. For route planning, the ride beside the sea and the return to the Litoranea can therefore be identified as two specific sections of a cycling loop.

Torre di Buranaccio, Palazzo and Giardino

The Torre di Buranaccio stands on a coastal tombolo that separates the sea from the wetland. The tower has a square ground plan and walls two to three metres thick. In the village of Chiarone on the Via Aurelia stands the Palazzo del Chiarone, which served in earlier centuries as a customs post for traffic between two states. The Giardino dei Tarocchi, created by artist Niki de Saint Phalle, is also located in Garavicchio in the wider area around Chiarone Scalo. The Palazzo and the Giardino complement the Torre with regional customs history and the art of Niki de Saint Phalle.

Maremma cuisine in the surrounding area

The menu of the Sagra della Lumaca e della Cucina Maremmana includes snail dishes and Maremma specialities, including tortelli, rosticciana, acquacotta and fagioli al fiasco. For the event, food stalls at Circolo Il Mare in the Chiarone Scalo area were scheduled to open daily from 7:30 p.m. It was announced as the 43rd edition.
