Holiday apartment in Spedaletto – gardens, wine and historic sites

Spedaletto combines historic architecture, garden culture, winegrowing and trails through the surrounding area. This mix is particularly vivid at Poggio Torselli: a cypress avenue leads to Villa Poggio Torselli and continues to an elegant 18th-century façade. The combination of villa, garden, vineyard and trails is one of the specific themes of Spedaletto.

Gardens, villas and historic details

The Giardino all’Italiana at Poggio Torselli is laid out on two levels. Plants with seasonally changing blooms, as well as aromatic and medicinal herbs, grow there. The garden also includes a collection of 130 citrus trees in Impruneta terracotta pots. Particularly remarkable is the irrigation system, which remains completely intact to this day: 18th-century channels made of Pietra serena lead to basins carved from Pietra forte. Because of the slope, all the garden beds are irrigated by gravity. Villa Tosi and its outbuildings in Spedaletto are also protected under a preservation order dated 2 August 1974. The Impruneta terracotta pots and the Pietra forte basins are specific design elements of the garden.

Winegrowing as part of the character of the area

The Montecapri vineyard at Poggio Torselli is devoted entirely to growing Sangiovese. The Poggio Torselli winery has a fermentation room with stainless-steel tanks and a total capacity of more than 3,000 hectolitres. Sangiovese cultivation in Montecapri and the stainless-steel tanks in the fermentation room therefore represent two distinct aspects of winegrowing here.

Trails and local connections around Spedaletto

The municipal Itinerario 3 is 47 kilometres long, leads to Spedaletto, runs approximately 300 metres behind Villa Poggio Torselli and joins the SS2 Cassia near the historic centre of San Casciano. The CAI hiking trail Sentiero 452, Anello del Principe (Albergaccio di Machiavelli), passes along a section with an unpaved surface, crosses the Borro Suganella and continues to Spedaletto. SPEDALETTO SAN CASCIANO is connected by bus route 368. When planning the Itinerario 3, its length of 47 kilometres is a factor in its own right. For Sentiero 452, the unpaved surface remains a specific consideration when classifying the trail; the crossing of the Borro Suganella is an additional factor. A longer excursion can be planned based on the number of kilometres. For the trail in the countryside around Spedaletto, the unpaved surface and the crossing can serve as specific planning factors when planning a day trip locally.
