Holiday Apartment in Ponzalla – History and Trails at Passo del Giogo
History at the MuGot
Ponzalla draws attention to a journey in which cultural history, trails at Passo del Giogo and mountain destinations in the wider regional area can be considered together. The MuGot – Museo Gotica Toscana is particularly significant. If you would like to combine your stay with historical impressions, you will find a specific focus here on the battles of the Second World War and the landscape of the Gothic Line.
The MuGot – Museo Gotica Toscana was founded in 2011 to preserve the memory of the battles fought in September 1944 between German troops and the Allies in the Apennines north of Florence. In the hamlet of Ponzalla, the MuGot consists of four large halls. Visitors, researchers and school groups can find various battlefield installations and numerous museum objects from the Second World War there.
The Monumento ai Caduti del 363° Reggimento Fanteria US is also one of the particularly moving historical subjects. The monument bears the names of 436 soldiers of the 363rd US Infantry Regiment, 91st Division, who were killed in combat in this area.
Booking is required at the MuGot for battlefield visits and Battlefield tours in a nine-seat van.
Trails at Passo del Giogo
Bunkers and installations along a ridge at least 5 kilometres long around Passo del Giogo can be visited by prior appointment. The installations of the Gothic Line are part of several themed hiking trails that can be combined with a visit to the MuGot. In this way, the focus is not only on sightseeing but also on trails with historical connections.
The route “Tra curve e tornanti del Passo del Giogo” provides another perspective. After leaving Scarperia, it leads via Ponzalla on a 10-kilometre climb to Passo del Giogo.
A hiking route along the Gothic Line initially leads from Passo del Giogo along the marked forest track of trails 00 and SO.F.T. After about 400 metres, it branches through a forest towards Monte Altuzzo.
Mountains in the Wider Area
