Discover San Donnino – Nature, Culture and Cycling Ring

San Donnino can be discovered from several distinctly different perspectives: via a cycle route connecting to Florence, through sacred art and historic churches, and through wetlands and renaturalised landscapes.

Cycling to San Donnino

The Cicloviadelsole route leads to San Donnino. From there, a cycling ring branches off and crosses Florence from east to west along the right and left banks of the Arno. For planning the day, the east-west direction and the right and left banks of the Arno provide the spatial orientation of the cycling ring in Florence. The route therefore places the Arno and Florence alongside San Donnino at the centre of attention. San Donnino’s cycling connection thus extends from the town to the river area and to Florence.

Wetlands and renaturalised landscapes

The part of the San Donnino area located within the municipality of Campi Bisenzio belongs to the ZSC IT 5140011 protected area, “Stagni della Piana Fiorentina e Pratese”. The San Donnino area also has two wetlands that were created through cooperation between WWF and the Consorzio di Bonifica. These wetlands serve as important stepping stones for birdlife along the north-south axis of the plain.

Following renaturalisation work, the publicly accessible green area Parco Chico Mendes was established near San Donnino station. The park comprises three small and medium-sized lake basins. They originated from former gravel and sand extraction and were subsequently renaturalised.

Church and Sacred Art

The Chiesa di Sant’Andrea a San Donnino is also known as Sant’Andrea a Brozzi and was built in the 11th century. Next to the church, the Museo d’Arte Sacra di San Donnino is housed in a 14th-century loggia and in adjoining rooms of the rectory. The museum preserves, protects and displays the art-historical heritage of the two historic churches of Sant’Andrea and San Donnino. The church, loggia and adjoining rooms of the rectory are located directly next to one another.

Historical Attractions in the Surrounding Area

Near San Donnino is Badia di S. Salvatore a Settimo, a monastery. Da Bobo All'acciaiolo and Anfiteatro delle Cascine are also located near San Donnino; both are archaeological sites. Villa Guicciardini Corsi Salviati, a palace, is also located in the surroundings of San Donnino.
