Historical traces around the Pieve

The name “Pieve al Toppo” derives from a rural parish church known as a pieve. A very old pieve with an adjoining pilgrims’ hospice already existed in 938. The adjoining pilgrims’ hospice connects the pieve with the pilgrimage traditions of its early history. This early connection between the church and pilgrimage gives the local history a particular historical depth.

The early Christian pieve of Pieve al Toppo had been abandoned by the middle of the 15th century. The old pieve stood where the Via Cassia towards Chiusi met the old road towards Siena. As a result, the area appears within a context in which religious history and former routes stand closely alongside one another.

In 1288, Guglielmino degli Ubertini’s army defeated the troops from Siena at Pieve al Toppo. The early Christian pieve was united with the church of S. Andrea di Oliveto. From 1906, the oratory was dedicated to Madonna del Conforto.

Near Pieve al Toppo lies the imposing Mugliano estate complex. It complements the ecclesiastical and transport-history connections with another distinctive architectural ensemble, providing an additional historical focus for exploring the area.
