A particularly far-reaching view into history leads to the Pieve di Santa Maria in Altaserra. It was first mentioned on 20 June 715 in a document concerning a dispute between the bishops of Arezzo and Siena. The Pieve di Santa Maria Assunta in Altaserra is a religious building of early Christian origin and was rebuilt in the 12th century. It contains a baptismal font dated 1596 and a carved stone holy-water stoup from 1574.

Outside the ring of walls surrounding the castle of Montebenichi stands the Chiesa di Santa Maria e Santa Brigida. Its interior features Neo-Gothic murals. Its location outside the castle and the design of the interior create contrasting accents within the village setting.

Castle center and local traditions

The Castelletto di Montebenichi directly adjoins a broad, still visible section of the medieval walls. Originally, it was the heart of the fortress; the painter Salvadore Malesci restored it in Neo-Gothic forms. Here, medieval fortifications meet a later artistic style.

According to some scholars, Francesco Stendardi, one of the sons of the well-known Capitan Goro, had the Oratorio di San Francesco built in 1605. The church of Madonna del Conforto preserves an image of the Madonna della Misericordia. Palazzo Stendardi stands at the entrance to Montebenichi. Gregorio Stendardi is said to have served as Goro da Montebenichi in the troops of Giovanni dalle Bande Nere and under Francesco Ferrucci.

Forest, ridge paths and water

Behind Montebenichi, the Sentiero C.A.I. N° 147 runs through a wooded area dominated by deciduous trees, chestnuts, beeches, downy oaks and strawberry trees. The Alta Valdambra CAI 47 hiking trail reaches the medieval castle of Montebenichi and can be explored on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback.

The section of CAI 47 from Montebenichi to Cennina follows an old ridge road that once connected the Valdambra with Chianti. On the Viaggio tra ruscelli e sorgenti di Montebenichi excursion, you follow the watercourse for about three kilometers and cross it approximately eight times. The different types of terrain give you the flexibility to plan your day between forest, ridge and water.

The Olivone di Montebenichi

A distinctive natural feature is the Olivone di Montebenichi, also known as Noccolo. The tree is estimated to be around 500 years old, has a circumference of approximately 640 cm and is about 4.5 meters high. Since 2023, the Olivone di Montebenichi has been included in the Regional Registers of Local Genetic Resources.
