Pieve a Maiano between history and protected landscapes

Pieve a Maiano combines striking reminders of the past with excursions through a protected landscape. The place name derives from the vanished parish church, which has been documented since the 12th century.

Church, Bell and Oratorio La Casina

The Church of S. Maria Assunta dates from the 19th century. It houses a bell from Montoto dating from 1358. Thus, S. Maria Assunta brings together a 19th-century building and a bell from 1358.

In 2023, visits to the Oratorio La Casina in Pieve a Maiano were scheduled on Thursdays and Saturdays during the second week of the month, except from 15 July to 31 August. Booking by telephone in advance was required; the scheduled visiting hours were between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m.

Lago di Penna and paths in the protected area

In the surroundings of Pieve a Maiano, the Ponte a Buriano e Penna Nature Reserve includes the Natura 2000 site of Community importance “Ponte a Buriano e Penna”. The Tuscany Region designated this site on 10 November 1998 under the Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC.

The 800-metre-long Sentiero C begins near Pieve a Maiano and leads in about 15 minutes to the observation huts at Lago di Penna. For planning an excursion, the path and the hut visit should be considered separately: access to the huts is permitted only as part of guided visits. The distance of 800 metres and the duration of about 15 minutes refer to the path to the huts; the guided visit is subject to separate regulations.

Driving route and access

The municipal driving route “Valdarno–Civitella in Val di Chiana” begins in Pieve a Maiano at State Road 69 and covers approximately 25 kilometres to Civitella in Val di Chiana. A full day is planned for the entire route. Its timeframe is therefore different from that of Sentiero C, for which about 15 minutes to the observation huts are indicated.

Pieve a Maiano is also an alternative access point to the Ponte a Buriano e Penna Nature Reserve; parking is available there. The municipal ATAM bus routes from Arezzo, which stop in Pieve a Maiano, can be used to reach the protected area. The public SITA services between Arezzo and Florence also stop in the village and run along State Road 69.
