History between Curtis and the Via Romea

Frassineta emerged around the 10th century as a rural “CURTIS”, meaning an agricultural settlement managed by a wealthy landowner. In June 1019, Pietro, son of donna Angantuada, donated one third of a house in Frassineta to the Badia di Prataglia. Around 1200, the village was surrounded by walls; within the fortifications stood the church, the watchtower, the square, and the seat of lordly and administrative power. In the Middle Ages, Frassineta was a stopping place for pilgrims travelling along the Via Romea.

Watchtower, churches and special testimonies

The medieval watchtower served for defence and observation and has a square floor plan, with sides measuring approximately four metres. Its stepped base is considered unique in Casentino and is reminiscent of Roman buildings. The parish church of Sant’Egidio has a single-nave layout, a slightly raised main altar and two side altars dedicated respectively to the Virgin Mary and Saint Anthony the Abbot. The church still contains a white banner with a blue cross, made from the silk of a parachute. The Cappellina houses a terracotta Madonna, known as the Madonna of the Seven Swords or Madonna of the Seven Sorrows, which is venerated by the inhabitants of Frassineta. The fountain and washhouse bear the coat of arms of Camaldoli.

Mountain views and trails through the landscape

An uphill trail leads to Frassineta, a small village dominated by its church. From Frassineta, there are sweeping views across the mountain range, from Monte Zuccherodante (1,224 m) via Montalto (1,291 m) and Poggio Tre Vescovi (1,232 m) to Monte Penna, as well as over Corezzo, surrounded by forests and meadows. CAI Trail 073 leads from Frassineta over Poggio della Cesta towards Badia Prataglia. A circular hike starting and ending in Frassineta passes through Turkey oak forests and by the ruins of the Bellaria farmstead.

Hiking, pilgrimage and mountain biking

Longer tours also connect Frassineta with the trails in the surrounding area. Route Anello 4, “Da Rifugio a Rifugio”, in the national park leads from Bagno di Romagna via Nasseto and Passo Serra through Corezzo and Frassineta to Badia Prataglia. MTB route 05 runs from Badia Prataglia via Frassineta, Biforco, Passo Serra and Passo Mandrioli, returning to Badia Prataglia. Along this route, Frassineta’s monumental chestnut trees are among its distinctive trees. A 4.5-hour circular hike follows the route Frassineta – Poggio della Forca – Rimbocchi – Aioli – Scappruggine – Molino di Corezzo – Corezzo – Frassineta. On a pilgrimage stage, the route to Frassineta initially follows the Alto Corsalone provincial road, then continues along CAI 054 and, near the ridge, joins CAI 053, which leads to La Verna. The different routes and the 4.5-hour duration help you distinguish between exploring the village, hiking, following a pilgrimage route and cycling.

Material culture at the Granaio di Narciso

The Granaio di Narciso in Frassineta provides a distinctive cultural highlight. This small permanent private exhibition is housed in an old barn and collects examples of the material culture of Vallesanta. Visits are available by arrangement at 340 6472250.
