Castelnuovo dei Sabbioni: History, Art and Green Landscapes

Castelnuovo dei Sabbioni combines an unusual village history with art, remembrance and a landscape that makes the transformation of the former mining area visible. The old village was gradually abandoned from 1963 onward because lignite mining had affected the stability of the foothills. The historic center of Castelnuovo dei Sabbioni has been preserved; the old village was restored and reconstructed. At the same time, the former mining area is considered a lush green oasis, enhanced by the artificial lake of Castelnuovo dei Sabbioni. The contrast between the preserved village, the former lignite mining operations and the lake gives the area a distinctive character. This makes it possible to get to know the surroundings not only through individual sights, but also through their visible transformation.

MINE is located in several buildings in the Vecchio Borgo of Castelnuovo dei Sabbioni. It documents and commemorates the history of the area, where lignite was mined for 150 years to generate energy and support development. Churches and works of art also guide visitors through the history of Castelnuovo dei Sabbioni. The remains of the old fortress were partially incorporated into the Church of San Donato, high on the hill. The modern parish church of Castelnuovo dei Sabbioni houses a painting of the Madonna and Child with Saints, taken from the old village church. The painting dates from the 15th century. Piazza Sandro Pertini is also home to Venturino Venturi’s “Murale per la pace”. The work is 76 meters long and covers an area of 305 square meters; it depicts the eternal contrast between war and peace.

Since April 1984, a monument to the Resistance has stood in the square next to the church of Castelnuovo dei Sabbioni. The Chiesa-Auditorium, the adjacent street and the associated properties are part of the “Strada della Memoria”, a route commemorating the history and significance of the buildings connected with the events of July 4, 1944. Castelnuovo dei Sabbioni also served as a filming location for Alessandro Benvenuti’s film “Ivo il tardivo”.

Trails, Villages and Regional Impressions

The Festa della Primavera program included a 13-kilometer trekking route through villages and parish churches along forest paths. A shorter trekking route was also planned, following the white roads of the former mine to a point near the old village of Castelnuovo in Avane. The different lengths provide practical guidance for planning a more active day, without requiring both routes to fit the same time or distance framework. The Festa della Primavera also featured a Sagra delle Frittelle with sweet and savory fritters.
