Cortina combines landscape and history through specific destinations. A hiking trail to the ruins of Garliano Castle begins at the houses higher up in Cortina. The starting point is therefore by the houses of the village, before the path leads to the historic ruins. The exploration of the castle complex thus begins directly in Cortina and leads uphill to its plateau.

Garliano Castle: Ruins on the Plateau

The ruins of Garliano Castle are located at 769 metres above sea level and are scattered across a plateau overlooking the Fosso della Magnana. The altitude and the extent of the plateau define the location of the complex. The individual remains do not form a single enclosed structure but are spread across the plateau.

West and East: Different Parts of the Complex

The western section of the castle complex is square, measures 30 × 30 metres, and occupies the highest part of the plateau. A well-preserved central cistern with a square plan and barrel vault is located there. This western section may have formed part of a lordly tower residence. In the eastern section, a long surrounding wall encloses the complex. Regularly arranged rooms probably served residential or service functions there. An internal road apparently separates the two parts of the complex. In the west, the square layout and central cistern define the appearance, while in the east, the wall and the regularly arranged rooms do.

Garliano Between the Middle Ages and the Present

In 1248, Garliano was referred to as “villam Garliani”, and in 1317 as “castrum Sancti Donati de Garliano”. The castle complex initially belonged to the Guidi counts and later to the municipality of Florence. Near Cortina, it is also associated with the microtoponym “Castello”. The history of the complex is therefore reflected both in its medieval names and in its later affiliation with the municipality of Florence.

Walks and Cultural Impressions around Cortina

Walks are possible on the approximately twenty-kilometre-long high meadowland of Pratomagno. The approximate length of the high meadowland is relevant for planning a day trip, as walks there can vary in distance. Visits to the Museo della pietra lavorata and its opening hours are also possible by prior arrangement. Cortina forms part of the ensemble “Garliano(Cortina,CaseMicheli,Poggiolino)”, which has exceptional landscape value as well as good independent architectural and urban-planning value.
