Holiday apartment in Rigutino: Lignano, history and festivals
Rigutino combines the landscape around Monte Lignano with religious and historical traces, as well as festivals at which polenta and local traditions play a visible role. This gives the town concrete points of interest for walks in the park, an old parish church, memorial sites and seasonal events.
Trails and landscape around Lignano
The Parco Comunale di Lignano covers approximately 300 hectares. It can be reached on foot and by bicycle via an extensive network of trails. With its size and extensive network of trails, it forms a clear landscape focus for days spent walking or cycling. The two access roads to Parco di Lignano from Gragnone and Rigutino are paved. This allows the trails in the park and the journey from Gragnone or Rigutino to be considered separately when planning the day. The combination of the park's size, network of trails and access roads makes this landscape a clearly distinct part of a stay in Rigutino. The park can be included in the itinerary as a separate landscape focus alongside Rigutino's historical and culinary themes.
Church, history and remembrance
The Church of San Quirico alla Sassaia is an old parish church in Rigutino at the foot of Monte Lignano. The Pieve della Sassaia was documented in the 11th century under the name San Quirico “de Briciano”. Another historical connection is provided by the rooms of the former parish house of Pieve la Sassaia: in 2009, they were converted into the “Pieve la Sassaia” refuge and incorporated into the Via Francigena routes. At Lignano, a Stations of the Cross is recorded as a local religious tradition in Rigutino. A small monument in Rigutino's local cemetery also commemorates the partisan Livio Conti. The year 2009 and the documented mention in the 11th century mark two different points in the history of the Pieve. Those interested in Rigutino's religious and historical traces in addition to the Parco Comunale di Lignano can include the parish church, the Stations of the Cross and the monument in their own day plan.
Local festivals and polenta
In Rigutino, the Sagra della Polenta was scheduled for 2024 from October 3 to October 6 and from October 10 to October 13, and for 2025 from October 2 to October 5 and from October 9 to October 12. At the Sagra della Polenta, polenta is prepared simply with oil, cheese and pepper, or in more elaborate variations with mushrooms or meat sauce. The Castagnata di Rigutino is associated with the last weekend of October; the dates may vary. The Festa della Battitura in Sassaia di Rigutino is associated with mid-July. The festival dates are therefore spread across two periods of the year: October for the Sagra della Polenta and the Castagnata, and mid-July for the Festa della Battitura. The Sagra combines the October dates documented for 2024 and 2025 with a dish prepared either simply or in more elaborate variations.
