The “Pejo 1914–1918. The War at the Doorstep” Museum displays uniforms, personal belongings, a field kitchen, the container of a cableway from Punta Linke, a first-aid hut, a tabernacle used in the trenches and a portable altar. Together with Stelvio National Park, the museum organises information evenings and excursions to sites connected with the First World War.

Punta Linke is a memorial site from the First World War that is probably among the highest memorial sites in Europe. The route from Peio follows SAT Trail No. 105. This climbs from Doss dei Cembri at an altitude of 2,300 m, which can be reached by mountain railway, to the Vioz Mantova mountain hut. Punta Linke has a visitor trail and is open to the public in summer. The nearby Austrian Barbadifior Fort can also be discovered on an easy walk; it was built at an altitude of 1,600 m and used as a barracks during the First World War.

San Giorgio and the village’s long history

The present structure of the monumental complex by the bell tower of San Giorgio in Peio Paese dates from the late 15th century. The bell tower of the San Giorgio church was built between 1480 and 1483 by craftsmen from Como and Val Camonica. At San Giorgio stands a restored figure of Saint Christopher, approximately 7 metres high. It was created shortly after the building was constructed by the brothers Giovanni and Battista Baschenis from Averaria. The Church of Santi Giorgio e Lazzaro has five altars.

San Rocco Hill also reaches far back into the past: In 1885, archaeological finds from Gallic, Celtic or Rhaetian times were discovered there, demonstrating human presence since the distant past. A memorial service for the fallen is held every year at the beginning of September in the former San Rocco cemetery. In Peio Paese, evidence from different eras therefore stands close together without the individual historic sites losing their distinctiveness.

Nature trails and peaceful discoveries

At Malga Talè, there is a themed trail dedicated to alpine grouse and their complex strategies for adapting to the environment. A very easy walk from Peio Paese leads to the Capercaillie Forest. There, you can learn about the way wild birds live and their adaptation to the surrounding environment. These two nature destinations complement the historic sights with attentive observation of alpine wildlife.
