History and culture between Nago and Torbole

The Chiesa di Sant'Andrea has been documented since 1175. After being damaged by the passage of the French troops under General Vendôme, it was rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1703. Its entrance is accessible and well signposted. It is therefore one of the historic stops that can also be included in exploring the area independently of longer hikes.

In Nago, thirteen murals tell of past crafts and professions. The murals were created mainly by young local artists between 1996 and 1998; with a few exceptions, they depict activities from bygone times. The Chiesa della Santissima Trinità adds another ecclesiastical-historical highlight. Construction began in May 1618 on the initiative of the Tonelli family, and it was consecrated in 1636 by Prince-Bishop Carlo Emanuele Madruzzo. Inside are a marble high altar and a wooden sculpture by a Tyrolean sculptor from the 15th century.

The Casello del Dazio in Torbole also represents the changing uses of local buildings: it initially served as a customs post and later as accommodation for Austrian customs officers. The new cultural centre of the municipality of Nago-Torbole is located in the Forte superiore di Nago. The new library is housed on the ground floor, while the first floor is intended for cultural activities.

Ruins, glacial potholes and trails with lake views

After its destruction in 1703, Castel Penede is a ruin on a rocky spur amid dense vegetation. From there, the panorama extends across Lake Garda. Access is via a forest road blocked by a barrier and then along an uneven path. Castel Penede can be reached on foot or by special vehicles. This condition of the path is just as relevant when planning a holiday apartment as a base for your activities as the question of whether you prefer to plan short walks or more demanding sections of trail.

The Marmitte dei Giganti in Torbole are a distinctive landform. These glacial potholes have a diameter of 4 or 5 metres and a depth of 10 or 12 metres. They formed when meltwater plunged into crevasses in the glacier and swirling stones shaped the rock into bowl-shaped depressions. The Marmitte are in a panoramic location near the main road; stopping there is recommended.

Several trails provide access to the surrounding area in different ways. For centuries, the Strada di Santa Lucia was the most important connection between Lake Garda and Nago, and today it offers a walk through olive groves with panoramic views of the lake. The Sentiero della Pace 11 begins in Nago, crosses a plateau cultivated with vineyards and then joins trail 601. The Dalle Marmitte al Perlone route connects the Marmitte dei Giganti with the Castagneto di Nago. Along this route, sections of trenches and structures recovered by local associations are now visible and can be visited.

Active days on Lake Garda

The Sentiero Busatte Tempesta runs along a steep mountainside directly above Lake Garda, through dense Mediterranean vegetation. It includes iron stairways with more than 400 steps. A section of La linea blu dell'Alto Garda leads uphill from the centre of Torbole towards Busatte and then on to Nago. When choosing your accommodation, it may therefore be worth considering whether you would like to deliberately include trails with elevation changes and stairways in your holiday days.

The lake itself also shapes Torbole. The small harbour continues to shelter several boats used by local residents for fishing. The Sup Tour Conca d'Oro route follows the northern shore of Lake Garda from Riva to Torbole. In Nago-Torbole, peaceful observations at the harbour therefore sit alongside a route on the water.
