Between Teroldego, alleyways and gorges

Wine has been cultivated in Mezzolombardo for thousands of years; Teroldego Rotaliano is considered a full-bodied and fragrant red wine from Mezzolombardo. In the historic Piaz quarter, alleyways, palaces and stately villas tell the story of Mezzolombardo as a trading community. Above the town, Monte Fausior contains deep gorges carved out by the Rio Fai.

Historic centre with churches and palaces

In the historic centre of Mezzolombardo, the Church of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist was built between 1846 and 1849. The bell tower preserved from the former church dates from 1752 to 1765 and now stands free-standing in the square.

Castello della Torre is a Renaissance residence surrounded by terraced gardens. Its oldest core is a mighty 13th-century tower that was incorporated into the central residential building. The complex also includes the 16th-century Chapel of S. Apollonia in the panoramic gardens. Castello della Torre is not open to visitors, but it can be viewed from Mezzolombardo’s historic alleyways.

The Church of San Pietro also combines several historical periods: it was built in the 12th century and later rebuilt in 1534. Palazzo del Podestà is an 18th-century stately residence with rich decorative details.

Wine, distillery and local experiences

Cantina Rotaliana calls itself the “Casa del Teroldego”. Its 300 members are committed to preserving the Teroldego grape variety. At Cantina Rotaliana, guided tours of the wine cellar and vineyard can be booked.

At Agricola Foradori, the bookable “Diario di viaggio” experience begins in the estate’s vineyards and vegetable gardens. It includes visits to two cellar rooms: one with wooden barrels and vats, and another with terracotta tinajas. The experience ends with a tasting of biodynamically produced wines accompanied by raw-milk cheese.

Villa de Varda’s bookable “inQuota Whisky Discover” experience includes a guided tour of the distillery, a visit to the Cose di Casa Museum and a tasting of four inQuota whiskies. The Cose di Casa Museum at Villa de Varda is divided into three sections and displays around 1,600 objects related to agriculture, winemaking and distillation in Trentino.

Suspension bridge and mountain trails

The 130-metre-long Ponte sospeso Mezzolombardo suspension bridge connects Toresela with Colle San Pietro. It can be reached on foot in ten minutes from Mezzolombardo’s historic centre. The Ferrata Val del Ri, on the other hand, begins in the upper part of Mezzolombardo at the tower top known as Toresela and is considered suitable for experienced hikers.

The SAT trail O603B is associated with the designations Pra Grant and Croce di Mezzolombardo, as well as with the value 690.
