Discover Caldonazzo: Lake, History and Culture
A holiday apartment in Caldonazzo gives you access to a place where the lake, wide-open landscapes and traces of history exist side by side. Caldonazzo stretches across a broad plain between Lago di Caldonazzo, orchards and the bubbling Centa stream. Lago di Caldonazzo is the largest lake located entirely within Trentino. Swimming is permitted from May to September; the beaches have been awarded the Blue Flag.
Lake, Green Spaces and an Artistic Trail
The Parco del lago is a unique recreational area: the enclosed green space has toilets and electricity, as well as an amphitheatre with a lawn area, a covered stage and a calisthenics area. Anyone wishing to combine exercise with cultural impressions will find a special way to experience the landscape through LakeART. LakeART combines the natural beauty of Valsugana with contemporary art and invites visitors to experience Lago di Caldonazzo and Lago di Levico along an experiential trail beside the cycling and walking route. Guided tours and QR codes provide deeper insights into the artistic and natural-history aspects of the experience.
Churches and Traces of the Past
The Chiesa di San Sisto houses the only surviving organ in Trentino made by the Serassi organ-building family from Bergamo. The church was first mentioned in 1345 and rebuilt in the 18th century. Inside are two large fragments of a Christian gravestone dating from the 6th century. The Chiesa di San Valentino on Colle di Brenta was probably built before 1259. In front of this church, the Roman military road Via Claudia Augusta once ran along the ridge of the hill.
Caldonazzo also has a strong connection with castle history. The Magnifica Corte di Caldonazzo is a castle; in local usage, the names Castel Trapp and Castello di Caldonazzo are also common. When the Castello di Caldonazzo was destroyed by the Scaliger army in 1385, the so-called Torre dei Sicconi remained standing. A botanical garden was created around the still-visible remains, and it can be reached from Caldonazzo via a pleasant walk.
Local Speciality and Seasonal Events
Mais Spin di Caldonazzo, an old local corn variety from Trentino, is part of the region’s identity. Events are also held at the Magnifica Corte Trapp, including the Mercatino dei Rigattieri Tirolesi in spring and the Rassegna di Canti Spirituals in summer. Alongside lake activities and walks, Caldonazzo therefore offers opportunities to get to know the area through its culture and regional specialities.
