The Ultner High Trail as a Multi-Day Hike

The Ultner High Trail is an almost 50 km circular hike marked as Route No. 12. It can be completed in two to three days and leads through the heart of Stelvio National Park to the Haselgruber Hut and the Haselgruber Lakes. When planning this route, the marked trail, its length and the duration of two to three days are the key factors. Those who spread the hike over two to three days can plan stages and breaks along the circular trail. The Haselgruber Hut and the Haselgruber Lakes are further destinations on the same circular hike.

Schwemmalm in Summer and Winter

Schwemmalm displays a clear change of seasons. In summer, it is a popular meeting place for hikers, paragliders and mountain bikers. In winter, it is a snow-reliable ski area for experienced skiers. The choice of travel period therefore depends on whether summer activities or winter sports are the main focus.

Ancient Larches and Lahnersäge

The ancient larches of Ulten were placed under protection and stabilised in 1979. In St. Gertraud, the Lahnersäge visitor centre is located in a centuries-old sawmill. Until the 1980s, the farmers of the Ultner Valley brought their wood to this sawmill for sawing. The Lahnersäge visitor centre focuses on the importance and functions of the forest for people and nature.

Gothic Churches and Traditional Farmsteads

The Gothic Church of San Maurizio stands on a hill at an altitude of 1,632 m and is probably considered the oldest church in the valley. The Gothic Church of San Nicolò was first mentioned in official records in 1338 and has a neo-Gothic winged altar with remarkable sculptures. Traditional farmsteads in Ulten included a log-built firehouse erected on walls and a barn built from roundwood. They differ in their construction; both buildings were covered with shingles, and this building style has survived to the present day. The two farmsteads therefore combine different timber construction methods with shingle roofing that has been preserved to this day.

Ultner Valley Museum in St. Nikolaus

The Ultner Valley Museum in St. Nikolaus offers insights into the former rural life of the Ultner Valley. It displays a farmhouse parlour, a smoke kitchen, a bedroom and a dairy room. These rooms illustrate how people once lived and worked. The farmhouse parlour and bedroom belong to the living areas, while the smoke kitchen and dairy room were domestic work areas. Guided tours of the Ultner Valley Museum are available daily on request.

Regional Specialities

The Ultner Genuss culinary event series invites visitors to taste regional specialities amid the natural surroundings of the Ultner Valley. At the Zuanochten farmers’ market, farmers from Ulten and Deutschnonsberg present their quality products. Ultner Genuss focuses on tastings, while the Zuanochten farmers’ market focuses on quality products from farmers in Ulten and Deutschnonsberg.
