Paths Through Terraces and to the Coast

The main section of the Sentiero romano del Khaggiár can be reached by car or local bus from Punta Spadillo or Cala Cinque Denti. The two places therefore offer different ways of planning your journey to the main section. Anyone wishing to combine a hike with a striking coastal landscape will find lava cliffs, hidden coves, natural pools and wartime fortifications at Punta Spadillo. The area is designated as a protected coastal area.

The Church of San Francesco is located in Contrada Khamma. It is documented as early as 1552 and celebrates its patronal feast on 4 October. On Route No. 4 near Punta Spadillo, hikers will also encounter numerous wartime remains, including bunkers, gun emplacements and defence posts from the Second World War.

The military cemetery of Khamma is a historical testimony to the Second World War. Around 30 soldiers, presumed to be Italian or foreign, who fell in the Second World War are buried there. Together with the fortifications and remains along the path, this part of Khamma offers a quiet, historically shaped view of the island.

Wine and Regional Character

The Donnafugata Winery in the Khamma district offers the opportunity to learn about the production of Ben Ryé and taste Donnafugata wines. This experience adds a food-and-wine dimension to the paths and historic sites. The Giardino Pantesco Donnafugata is also one of the area’s special destinations: in 2008, it was donated by the Donnafugata family to FAI.
