At Palazzo Florio, Favignana’s Florio history becomes tangible: after purchasing the Aegadian Islands, Ignazio Florio Senior commissioned the architect Giuseppe Damiani Almeyda to design Palazzo Florio as a country residence.

Culture and History

Palazzo Florio features representative rooms with large windows facing the sea. These include a dining room, a salon that was also used as a ballroom, a billiard room and a library. The third and final floor served as the guest area and comprised nine bedrooms, a salon, a smoking room and a panoramic terrace.

La via dei Florio connects the places on Favignana associated with the Florio family in a single signposted circular route. Information boards provide interesting facts about the family and its relationship with the region.

The Ex Stabilimento Florio delle Tonnare di Favignana e Formica has been converted into a museum. It presents the history of tuna fishing and the people involved in this traditional fishery. The antiquarium displays Greek-Roman and Punic amphorae, lead anchors, prehistoric stone tools and shell remains from the waters around the Aegadian Islands. The halls dedicated to the Battle of the Aegadian Islands use interactive elements to provide information about the historic military events, ancient warships and underwater archaeology.

Tuna is closely connected with Favignana’s history and culture. Stories, anecdotes, traditions and other related knowledge were collected in the Biblioteca del Tonno e delle Tonnare in the former Florio tuna fishery.

Nature and the Island’s Landscape

Favignana is located in the 53,992-hectare Isole Egadi marine reserve, which has been managed by the municipality of Favignana on behalf of the Ministry of the Environment since 2001. Mooring at buoys in this marine reserve can reduce human pressure on the marine environment, particularly on the seagrass species Posidonia oceanica.

Favignana is mostly flat and consists to a considerable extent of tuff rock, which was used for construction purposes. The island can be explored by bicycle. The extraction of calcarenite was a historic economic activity on Favignana. Abandoned quarries were transformed into underground gardens with orchards and vegetable plots, which are now considered characteristic natural attractions of the island.

A cycling collection by Visit Sicily includes routes on Favignana along coastal roads and to hidden coves, as well as viewpoints overlooking turquoise waters.

Paths and Fortifications

The access road to Castello di Santa Caterina extends approximately halfway up; from there, the castle is reached on foot via a stepped path. Castello di Santa Caterina stands on the summit of the mountain of the same name and originated as a Saracen watchtower.

Castello di San Giacomo dates back to before the year 1000. It was built by the Saracens as a watchtower and, together with other towers, formed part of the Arab defensive system in Sicily.
