Custonaci combines cultural sites, natural attractions and festivals. The Festeggiamenti Maria Santissima di Custonaci, the Grotta Mangiapane and the Riserva Naturale Orientata Monte Cofano each give the town its own distinctive character.

Cultural Sites with Unusual Histories

The Museo Arte e Fede displays liturgical objects, silverwork and works connected with the cult of the Madonna di Custonaci. The Santuario di Maria SS. di Custonaci also shapes the town’s cultural identity. The present-day building was constructed between the 15th and 16th centuries and features a late Gothic style with Renaissance influences.

The Grotta Mangiapane is located in the vicinity of Custonaci. It is part of the Grotte di Scurati speleological site, which comprises nine caves in total. The Grotta Mangiapane is also an ancient prehistoric settlement: traces of human presence dating from the Upper Palaeolithic were discovered, including flint tools, as well as prehistoric pottery from the Early and Middle Neolithic. As an open-air museum, it also recreates traditional Sicilian rural life with agricultural tools, furniture, everyday objects and farm animals.

Cultural attractions in the area around Custonaci include the Castello di Venere and the Castello del Balio o Pepoli, both castles, as well as the Centro Di Cultura Scientifica Ettore Majorana, a museum, and Borgo Cusenza, a fortress. In Parco Cerriolo, artworks by local sculptor Giuseppe Cortese are integrated into the landscape. At Porta del Sole, at sunset on the winter solstice, the sun’s rays pass through the central opening of the trilithon.

Festivals and Living Traditions

The Festeggiamenti Maria Santissima di Custonaci take place every year at the end of August. They include a pilgrimage on Saturday morning from Sperone to the Santuario della Madonna di Custonaci. The highlight is a historical reenactment of the Madonna’s landing in the cala del Bukuto. For travel planning, the two events take place in different seasons: the Festeggiamenti are held at the end of August, while the Presepe vivente takes place during the Christmas season.

The Presepe vivente di Custonaci has been performed in the Grotta Mangiapane during the Christmas season since 1983. Since 2006, the Presepe vivente di Custonaci has been listed in the register of Sicily’s intangible cultural heritage.

Monte Cofano and the Surrounding Coastal Area

The Riserva Naturale Orientata Monte Cofano is accessible from Custonaci. Its vegetation includes more than 300 endemic or rare species. Spiaggia Monte Cofano is located in the vicinity of Custonaci, while Spiaggia del Bue Marino is located in the surrounding area of Custonaci.
