The former Tonnara di Tre Fontane was transformed into a modern CNR research centre through restoration and enhancement. It is located at a tuna fishing site that has been used since the beginning of the 17th century. The history of the place is therefore closely connected with work at sea and the processing of the catch.

The origins of the settlement and traditional festivals

The origins of the Torretta Granitola settlement date back to 1857. At that time, brothers Salvatore and Filippo Di Benedetto moved the fishing and preservation of the catch there from Tre Fontane. The Feast of the Assumption was another traditional festival of Torretta Granitola, attended by numerous residents of Campobello. In Torretta Granitola, the conclusion of the historic Mattanza period was associated with the Feast of the Assumption of Mary on 15 August.

Traces beneath the water's surface

During an underwater survey off Capo Granitola, numerous flint fragments were recovered at a depth of approximately 4 metres from a rocky seabed with extensive sandy areas.
