Castelvetrano can be experienced through two powerful impressions: the Greek past of Selinunte and the coastal landscape at the mouth of the Belice River. Added to these are historic buildings in the town centre, museums dedicated to the rural and archaeological heritage, and a strong bread-making tradition. If you are planning a stay in a holiday apartment in Castelvetrano, you can therefore shape your visit around antiquity, urban history, nature and the sea.

Ancient History and Urban Culture

The Archaeological Park of Selinunte is located in the municipality of Castelvetrano. Selinunte was one of Sicily’s most important Greek colonies. The park covers around 270 hectares and includes sandy ground, unpaved paths and trails that are not level everywhere. This influences how you explore the extensive site. Tourist trains connect the main areas of the Archaeological Park. They are not included in the admission price and may not be fully accessible.

The Chiesa di San Domenico stands in the historic centre of Castelvetrano. The Selinuntino Civic Museum preserves archaeological heritage from the ancient Greek city of Selinunte and is housed in the restored Renaissance building of Palazzo Majo. The Duomo di Santa Maria Assunta also offers a deep insight into the town’s history: construction began in 1520, and its basilica-style layout has three naves. The elegant neoclassical Teatro Selinus lies in the heart of Castelvetrano. The townscape also includes the Sistema delle Piazze, a cohesive group consisting of the three interconnected and directly adjoining main squares of Garibaldi, Umberto I and Cavour.

Coast, Dunes and Underwater Landscapes

By the sea, Castelvetrano reveals another side. The Foce del fiume Belice e dune limitrofe nature reserve protects an approximately 5-kilometre stretch of coastline between Marinella di Selinunte and Porto Palo di Menfi. The reserve’s beach is a nesting site for the loggerhead turtle Caretta caretta. A well-preserved, sandy coastal geosite is also located at the mouth of the Belice River. There, you can observe the complete beach profile and the ongoing development of the dunes. Small coastal wetlands have formed near the river mouth within this geosite.

Triscina di Selinunte has beaches with fine, golden sand. Offshore from Triscina, the seabed attracts many divers, who explore varied and richly structured underwater landscapes.

Bread-Making Tradition and Local Character

The Sagra del Pane Nero di Castelvetrano reached its second edition in 2025. The event focuses on Castelvetrano black bread and the flour made from the ancient Tumminìa wheat, which are highlighted as symbols of the local agri-food tradition.

Choose a Holiday Apartment in Castelvetrano Based on Your Travel Interests

When choosing your holiday apartment in Castelvetrano, it helps to consider your preferred daily rhythm. Historic buildings, museums, squares and the Teatro Selinus are ideal for a culture-focused stay. The Archaeological Park combines ancient history with an extensive landscape and paths that are partly unpaved and not level everywhere. For days spent in nature and on the beach, the reserve at the mouth of the Belice River, the golden beaches of Triscina and the underwater landscapes off the coast take centre stage instead. A holiday home or holiday apartment in Castelvetrano can therefore suit different ideas of a holiday without requiring you to focus on just one theme. The programme of the Nocellara Fest also included the “Tour Nocellara Bike”, which started at the Sistema delle Piazze in Castelvetrano. On 21 June 2026, the entrance to the Archaeological Park of Selinunte on the Triscina side was reopened with an opening walk; from there, the sanctuaries of Gaggera can be reached.
