Church, monastery and museum

The Santuario Maria Santissima di Gibilmanna is a three-nave church with side chapels. Its present structure probably incorporates the original Benedictine church. The Convento dei Frati Minori Cappuccini di Gibilmanna was founded in 1535 by Father Sebastiano da Gratteri. The Museo Fra Giammaria da Tusa is located in the restored former stable of the monastery attached to the Sanctuary. The museum is divided into ten rooms, each bearing the name of a friar.

The Museo Fra Giammaria da Tusa preserves Franciscan artefacts, valuable sacred vestments and furnishings, objects donated for devotional purposes, as well as objects from other cultures. It also houses a handcrafted organ with reed pipes from the 17th century, which experts consider to be a unique example in Europe. The library of the Capuchin fathers Fra Gesualdo da Bronte preserves incunabula, books from the 16th century, and volumes from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Art and notable historical details

The Sanctuary's furnishings include the marble effigy of Mary with the Christ Child, attributed to Antonello Gagini and dated to the 16th century. A restoration carried out in 2014–2015 uncovered an older image of Maria Odigitria in Gibilmanna, which had been hidden beneath a so-called Byzantine icon. The 17th-century Capuchin catacombs, dedicated to the hermit Giuliano de Placia, occupy the basement of the Madonna Chapel and part of the church.

Via dei Frati and Trail 603

From Santuario Gibilmanna, the Via dei Frati continues to the Sentiero Salvabosco and, after a mountain section, descends towards Cefalù. Stage 8 of the Via dei Frati runs through Castelbuono, Isnello, Santuario Gibilmanna and Cefalù. Trail 603, “Sentiero Ferla – Bivio Pianetti”, begins in the equipped Pianetti area at Pizzo S. Angelo; the Santuario di Gibilmanna is located 200 metres before the trailhead.

Trail 603, “Sentiero Ferla – Bivio Pianetti”, is 7 kilometres and 243 metres long and offers views over a valley with forests, cultivated fields and artificial lakes. The different route details help you distinguish between the two trail themes when planning your own day: the Via dei Frati describes a stage passing through several places and heading towards Cefalù, while Trail 603 is described more specifically by its length and views of the landscape.
