Palazzi with a History of Their Own

In the centre of Sant'Agata di Militello, behind the cathedral, stands Palazzo Gentile. It was built in the second half of the 19th century and features Liberty-style frescoes on its vaulted ceilings. Palazzo Gentile formerly housed the Museo dei Nebrodi. The palazzi of the Faraci family are among the most magnificent aristocratic residences in Sant'Agata di Militello. The aristocratic representative palaces were initially built in the Neoclassical style and later with Art Nouveau stylistic features.

Churches, Art and Everyday Culture

The Duomo di Sant'Agata di Militello, the Church of Madonna Addolorata del Carmelo, was built towards the end of the 17th century and completely restored in 2000. It features a double row of Corinthian columns and a mosaic depicting the Holy Family. The 17th-century Chiesa dell'Addolorata was formerly a chapel of the castle and houses a painting by Andrea D'Antoni as well as an 18th-century wooden crucifix by Filippo Quattrocchi.

Museum, Piazza and Seafront

The Museo Etnoantropologico dei Nebrodi preserves a collection of 400 objects from around 25 places in the Nebrodi. These include equipment used for olive harvesting, grain cultivation and cheese production, as well as clothing, religious objects and musical instruments. Piazza Vincenzo Consolo developed into a social meeting place and a stage for major public events in Sant'Agata di Militello. The 18th-century Porta di Mare was formerly an entrance to Sant'Agata di Militello from the seaside.
