The historic center of Mistretta is one of the most extensive and best-preserved historic centers in Sicily. Porta Palermo offers a characteristic introduction to the town’s history. It preserves an old city gate, reinforced with a monumental arch in the Baroque style and a viewing terrace.

The surviving remains of Castello di Mistretta include traces of a church, a cistern and underground rooms. The Cimitero Monumentale is also connected with the town’s architectural history: in 1874, the architect Giovan Battista Filippo Basile was contacted to design Mistretta’s monumental cemetery. Access is available on request; the route from the entrance is equipped with ramps and suitable walkways for people with disabilities.

The Abbeveratoio del Palo is one of Sicily’s largest monumental livestock watering troughs. The stonemasons Giaimo and Pellegrino completed the structure in 1860.

Museums of Archaeology, Wildlife and Crafts

The Museo Civico “E. Ortolani” displays archaeological finds from the periods of the Sicels, Sikelioi, Romans and Byzantines through to the Middle Ages. The picture gallery includes a “Flagellation of Christ” attributed to the Flemish painter Matthias Stom.

The Museo della Fauna e dello Scalpellino displays hundreds of stuffed specimens from the “Giambona” collection and explains the development of Sicily’s animal life. The museum also includes the Mu.Sca section, established in 2015, about the techniques used by stonemasons.

Churches and Religious Traditions

The Chiesa della Madonna della Luce has a hand-painted majolica floor from Santo Stefano di Camastra dating from the mid-19th century. The Chiesa di S. Lucia (Matrice) houses marble works by the Gagini family, including an altarpiece created in 1552, a baptismal font and a statue of Saint Lucy dated 1575. It also preserves medieval traces: remains of the original façade, a terracotta floor, a carved base and part of a column painted with figures of saints in 1488.

The Chiesa di San Sebastiano houses the “Vara” of the Li Volsi family, dating from 1610, as well as an associated statue by Noè Marullo. The Chiesa di San Giovanni is the setting for Mistretta’s traditional Good Friday procession. The Feast of the Madonna della Luce is an old religious tradition in Mistretta; on September 8, a procession passes through the town to the sanctuary dedicated to the Madonna della Luce.

The Chiesa della SS. Trinità has an elongated octagonal interior with a tent-roof vaulted ceiling. The stucco decoration was executed in 1759–1760 by Gioacchino Cerrito following a design by the priest-architect Benedetto Dia.
