Milazzo between the Citadel and the Coast
Milazzo combines fortified history with a coastal landscape of rocks, paths and sea. The Castello di Milazzo and the Spanish walls form the most extensive fortified citadel in Sicily. When choosing a holiday apartment in Milazzo, you can plan your stay around this interplay of culture and coast.
Fortress, Archaeology and Churches
The Castello di Milazzo stands in a place that has been continuously inhabited by people for at least 5,000 years. In the sacristy of the old cathedral in the Castello di Milazzo, a permanent exhibition displays 232 ancient coins.
A walk along the outer walls of the old Castello di Milazzo leads to the scenic Fortino dei Castriciani. The east wing of the so-called Quartiere degli Spagnoli, built in the 16th century, houses the Antiquarium Domenico Ryolo. It presents the archaeology of Milazzo in ten exhibition rooms and displays 1,267 finds dating from the Neolithic to the Byzantine period.
The Chiesa di San Francesco di Paola was founded around 1464 by the saint of the same name. In the Duomo Nuovo – Chiesa di Santo Stefano, two related panels from the 16th century, attributed to Antonello De Saliba, can be seen. Opposite the main façade, the remains of a late Roman and Proto-Byzantine necropolis from the 5th to 7th centuries AD are visible.
Baia del Tono and Paths by the Sea
The beach at Baia del Tono curves alongside rocky slopes and cliffs. The bay was once selected for the construction of the largest tuna fishing station on the northeastern coast of Sicily because of its natural characteristics and location.
From Baia del Tono, a path follows the rocky coastal slope to high cliffs.
The Capo Milazzo marine protected area includes the Site of Community Importance SIC ITA030045 Fondali di Capo Milazzo. Access to Capo Milazzo is free; you can arrive by car or on foot. By car, you reach the hilltop and then descend on foot to the sea.
A nature trail at Capo Milazzo leads to the natural rock formation Piscina di Venere. From Baia del Tono, ferries to the Aeolian Islands can be boarded.
Choose a Holiday Apartment in Milazzo Based on Your Travel Interests
For planning your trip, Milazzo offers several clearly distinct types of experiences: fortresses, churches and archaeology contrast with coastal paths, cliffs and the marine protected area. If different interests come together in your travel group, you can divide your stay between historical discoveries, activities by the sea, nature observation and a ferry trip to the Aeolian Islands. When choosing your accommodation, it is therefore worth considering your preferred daily rhythm and the focus of your trip.
