Religious Representations and Church Art

A Vasacra is a living representation of the Stations of the Cross that makes its way through Barrafranca on Holy Wednesday. U Trunu is the Good Friday procession of the fercolo of the SS. The Chiesa di San Benedetto combines architectural history with elaborate decoration: the church was founded in 1745, when the Marchesato di Barrafranca was in the hands of Caterina Branciforti. The year and the ruling authority at that time are part of the foundation history of this church building. Its interior is decorated with stucco and frescoes covering the entire church interior. In the central area of the interior there is also a large painting of the Assumption of Mary, which may have been created by Mariano Rossi of Sciacca (1731–1807). The furnishings are not limited to a single work, but include stucco and frescoes throughout the entire space as well as the central painting.

Almond Tradition with a Special Calendar Connection

The almond harvest is also part of Barrafranca’s inherited local culture. In the past, it was traditionally carried out by hand: cloths and long wooden poles—“ugghiate”—were used to knock down the almonds. In Barrafranca, it is traditionally said that the almond harvest takes place “doppu a Madonna,” meaning after the feast of the Madonna della Stella held on 8 September. This date gives the inherited almond tradition a fixed place in the local festival calendar.
