Villarosa combines the Erei mountain region with an unusually diverse history. The town lies between the Salso River, also known as the Imera Meridionale, and its tributary, the Morello. Anyone wishing to combine a trip to Sicily with culture, landscapes and insights into the lives of earlier generations will find a wide range of points of interest here – from the town’s foundation in the 18th century to archaeological traces dating back to pre-Christian times.

Discover Local History and Mining Traditions

Today’s town centre of Villarosa was founded in 1762. On 10 April of the same year, Placido Notarbartolo-Zati received the “Licentia Populandi”. Another important period began with sulphur-mining activity, which started between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This past can be experienced in several institutions, without the history being confined to a single museum.

The Treno Museo is housed in specially converted goods wagons at Villarosa railway station. It preserves furniture, household objects, equipment, tools and accessories used by the town’s farmers and miners. In contrast, the Casa dello Zolfataio is the centrepiece of the Casa Museo Villapriolo, an original farmhouse from the late 19th century. The exhibits include an Italian-Swiss threshing machine from 1955 that was used to harvest grain. The museum also includes a faithful reconstruction of the Bottega del Ciabattino. Visits are possible by prior reservation; groups and school classes can register from Monday to Friday.

The Museo della Memoria also offers an introduction to the local past. It is housed in Villa Lucrezia, a summer residence of an important local baronial family from the 19th century, and displays ethnographic artefacts from the local farming and mining communities. At the Monumento all’Emigrante, a mining cart from the Charleroi mining district in Belgium commemorates miners from Villarosa who emigrated and their departure for mines beyond the Alps. The 1876 Cimelio delle Acque, in turn, is dedicated to the water supply at the railway station. Photographs show the Sorgente Gazzana, whose water was used for steam locomotives.

Churches, Mountains and Archaeological Sites

The Chiesa Immacolata Concezione stands on the foundations of the 16th-century church of Madonna di Magando. Inside are three marble altars: the central altar is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception, while the side altars are dedicated to the Sacred Heart and the Madonna del Carmelo, respectively.

For impressions of nature and the landscape, the mountain ranges around Villarosa offer a different travel theme. Monte Marcasita is a 590-metre-high ridge south of the town; the Morello River runs nearby. The Lago Morello area currently belongs to a nature oasis of considerable faunal interest. Monte Giulfo reaches approximately 761 metres above sea level and towers over Villarosa’s built-up area.

Monte Giulfo is home to an archaeological site with a sanctuary where rites connected with the Thesmophoria were probably held. The settlement there dates from the late 7th century to the first decades of the 5th century BC. Another prehistoric site is Case Bastione in the Villarosa area. The periods of use of the Capanna 5 structure have been dated to between 2500 and 1800 BC. This allows you to choose between different historical periods during your trip and focus on local history, mining or archaeology.

Choose Between Traditions and Suitable Accommodation

Villarosa’s pastry traditions are also part of the town’s local character. Sfilici, Vucciddati with almonds and figs, Calinoli and Mustazzoli give the town’s culinary side a distinctive identity. The Festa della Madonna della Catena takes place at a Marian sanctuary on a hill approximately one kilometre from Villarosa’s town centre. In the past, it was celebrated as the conclusion of the agricultural work.

When choosing your holiday apartment or holiday house, you can base your decision on the desired combination of culture, landscapes, archaeology and regional traditions. Travellers who place museums and local history at the centre of their plans will organise their trip differently from those who mainly want to discover the mountain ranges, Lago Morello or the ancient sites. In this way, Villarosa remains a destination for a varied trip to Sicily, where each day opens up a different perspective on history and the landscape.
