Baratili San Pietro: Vernaccia, History and Holiday Apartments
Baratili San Pietro combines Vernaccia culture, local history and sacred architecture. This gives visitors a diverse range of experiences: winemaking traditions, historic buildings, a cultural documentation centre and traces of early settlement.
Vernaccia and the History of Winemaking
The Vernaccia grape is considered an indigenous variety that originally comes from this area. Baratili San Pietro is part of the Vernaccia di Oristano DOC production area.
In 1953, Cantina Madau housed the Vernaccia production of all the cooperative's members because the planned Cantina Sociale della Vernaccia di Oristano did not yet have suitable premises. The production therefore involved the entire cooperative, not just a single producer.
Winery History and Tastings
For almost the entire 20th century, Cantina Madau was the winery of Pietro Madau, a producer of Vernaccia di Baratili San Pietro. The long period and the named producer give this chapter a clear historical context.
The year 1968 marked Silvio Carta's final vinification at the historic site on Via Dante in Baratili San Pietro. At its historic winery in Baratili San Pietro, Silvio Carta offers its own tours and guided tastings. The years 1953 and 1968 mark different events in the local history of winemaking: cooperative production and the final vinification.
Culture, Architecture and a Long Local History
The Centro Culturale Domu De Sypoy serves as a documentation centre for the SYPOY nuragic archaeological site.
The Cantinetta della Vernaccia is designated as a tourist information office. Its building was the municipal washhouse until the 1960s.
The parish church of San Pietro has a Latin cross-shaped floor plan and a bell tower with an onion-shaped dome. The cross-shaped floor plan and the dome belong to different parts of the building: the floor plan describes the church, while the dome belongs to the bell tower.
The area where Baratili San Pietro was established had been densely settled since Phoenician times, as it formed part of the territory of Tharros. Phoenician times and Tharros therefore provide the early historical context for the settlement's history.
Culture enthusiasts will find several specific points of interest in Baratili San Pietro: winemaking, sacred architecture, the former municipal use of a building and the SYPOY nuragic archaeological site.
