Between Limbara, Wine and Culture

Mountain Landscapes, Rocks and Water

Berchidda lies on the southern foothills of the Limbara mountain range. In the Berchidda area, Punta Sa Berritta reaches an elevation of 1,362 metres. The granite landscape includes hollowed-out rock formations that create natural caves. In different periods, these were used as burial sites, dwellings and shelters for animals. Springs and small waterfalls are also part of the Berchidda landscape; they cascade down into the valley from the mountains behind them.

Butterflies and Forests on Limbara

The Giardino delle Farfalle in Limbara Sud was established to protect a rich and diverse entomological heritage with many rare butterfly species. The garden is located in the Foresta Demaniale del Limbara Sud, around 4 km from Berchidda town centre, and can be reached by road from the town in the direction of Vallicciola. Routes are available for planning excursions in nature through the forests of Monte Limbara.

Churches, Fortifications and Dolmens

The Chiesetta del Rosario dates from the 17th century. The parish church of San Sebastiano contains a recently restored polychrome Baroque wooden altar from the first half of the 18th century.

The Chiesa di Sant’Andrea dates from 1600, was recently restored and preserves a red trachyte door lintel. Nearby, in the Su adu ‘e su juru area, there are two dolmens. The first is considered a fully preserved burial site. The Castello di Monte Acuto was probably built in the 11th century on older prehistoric, Roman and early medieval fortifications. The surviving remains of the megalithic wall on the hill near Terramala in S’Iscala Serrada are known as Su Casteddu.
