Holiday apartment in Palau: Discover the coast, culture and Gallura
Accommodation in Palau
Holiday apartment in Palau between coast and history
Palau combines a distinctive coastal landscape with traces of different eras. If you choose a holiday apartment in Palau, your stay is not focused solely on time by the sea: beaches, historic buildings, museums and paths through the inland offer different facets of the area. The interplay between maritime history, archaeological evidence and insights into life in Gallura is particularly fascinating.
Palau has 24 kilometres of coastline stretching from the Gulf of Saline to the mouth of the Liscia River. More than 20 sandy beaches with very fine sand complement this landscape. When planning your holiday, you can therefore decide whether the coast should be the main focus or whether you would also like to structure your days around cultural and discovery tours.
Maritime history and historic buildings
Roccia dell'Orso was already a landmark for sailors navigating along the Gallura coast and through the Strait of Bonifacio in ancient times. Fortezza di Monte Altura also combines landscape and history: the fort, built in the 19th century, was constructed from granite from Monte Altura between 1887 and 1889 and is open to guided visits.
Other historic sites lead into Sardinia's past. Li Mizzani is a giants' tomb, meaning a collective funerary monument of Sardinia's Nuragic civilisation. At the Chiesetta Campestre di S. Giorgio, numerous traces from the pre-Nuragic and Nuragic periods, as well as Roman and Byzantine remains, have been preserved.
Archaeological sites and paths in the hinterland
From the summit of the hill on which the Nuraghe “Luchìa” stands, the view extends across the entire high plateau to the Strait of Bonifacio. The unpaved paths in the hinterland of Palau make it possible to experience the traditional way of life and historic character of Gallura. This creates a contrast with the sandy beaches and the coast.
Finding your way to individual destinations is also part of the diverse experiences around Palau. The route from Costa Serena to Batteria Militare Talmone follows a slightly uneven unpaved path and takes about 45 minutes on foot. The drive to Li Mizzani leads from Palau along the SS 133 towards Santa Teresa di Gallura. You then follow a paved side road for about 4.5 km, leave the car in a parking area and continue on foot behind a wooden gate.
Museum, crafts and living traditions
The Museo Etnografico divides its exhibitions into thematic areas covering domestic life, winegrowing, agriculture, livestock farming, means of transport and crafts. The section dedicated to domestic life displays kitchen utensils used to make bread and cheese. At the same time, the museum conveys Palau's origins through objects from the stazzi and the first craft workshops.
Cultural planning also includes the Feast of San Giorgio, which is still celebrated on the first Sunday in May. A holiday apartment in Palau can therefore be a starting point for very different kinds of holiday days: coastal experiences, historic sightseeing, walks through the hinterland or a visit to the Museo Etnografico. Which accommodation and daily rhythm are right for you depends above all on how you would like to combine these different focuses.
