Aglientu between the granite coast and protected nature
Aglientu combines a distinctive coastal landscape with exceptional nature and cultural experiences. The coastline is 32 kilometres long and alternates between granite heights and beaches extending over 22 kilometres.
The coast of Aglientu is fully protected and lies within the two Sites of Community Importance “Isola Rossa-Costa Paradiso” and “Monti Russu”. The “Monti Russu” area almost entirely encompasses the coastal strip located within the municipality of Aglientu. The coast and natural environment are therefore closely connected and give the destination a clear focus for both relaxing and active days of holiday.
Nature, activity and culture in Aglientu
The approximately 117-kilometre network of paths within the municipality provides a setting for trekking and running. On the water, canoeing, kayaking and canyoning offer further possibilities. Trails and water along the Rio Vignola
The municipality has an approximately 117-kilometre network of paths for trekking and running. The approximate length allows for different plans without limiting the destination to a single route. Those who enjoy exploring on foot can therefore discover Aglientu from an active perspective.
From its mouth, the Rio Vignola can be navigated upstream by canoe or kayak for approximately 3 kilometres. Its course can then be explored further while canyoning.
Towers, nuraghi and festivals
The Torre Spagnola was built in 1605 as part of a defensive plan implemented by the Spanish administration of Philip II against raids by the Saracens. It served to guard a tuna-fishing station established a few years earlier. From Vignola Mare, the Torre Spagnola can be reached on foot via the beach and the mouth of the Rio Vignola; the mouth is dry in summer.
The Nuraghe Tuttusoni has a central tholos, that is, a false dome, with a height of 6.15 metres and is built entirely of granite. The Nuraghe Finucchjiaglia is situated on a hill and offers views across the entire surrounding area to the sea. At the same time, it is a complex structure with a central tower and a three-lobed bastion.
The Chiesa San Pancrazio was built around the 17th century. Its festivals are celebrated on 12 May and 5 August. Another fixed, recurring event is the Festa del Turista “Sagra della salsiccia arrosto e del formaggio”, which reached its 52nd edition in 2024.
