One striking coastal feature is Cala Moresca, a small, sheltered cove with emerald-green water and reddish rocks. In Arbatax, Rocce Rosse rises as a red porphyry cliff approximately 15 metres above the sea. Both places offer different impressions: here, a sheltered cove defines the scenery, while there, a distinctive rocky cliff takes centre stage.
Archaeology as a special focus
The S’Ortali ’e su Monti archaeological site brings together several eras in one worthwhile destination. It includes a Domus de Janas carved into the rock during the Late Neolithic period. The Nuragic complex also features a central tholos tower, a defensive wall, three smaller towers and the foundations of around ten ancient huts. S’Ortali ’e su Monti is also home to Sardinia’s largest Nuragic granary, with ten underground silos. Along this section of the cycling route, you can reach and visit the archaeological site via a detour of approximately 400 metres. This makes it possible to combine an active excursion with historical interest without reducing the site’s archaeological character to a single structure.
Towers, casemates and historic buildings
The Tower of San Gemiliano was built at the beginning of the 17th century. From a position 42 metres above sea level, it commanded the beaches of Orrì and Cea. The Parco Batteria offers another perspective on the history of Arbatax. It preserves thirteen casemates in which soldiers were housed during the Second World War to protect the strategically important port of Arbatax. The park includes a nature trail and also offers panoramic views of the town. Historical evidence, a walk through nature and sweeping views therefore come together in one place.
Church, festival and local memory
The former cathedral of Sant’Andrea is an 18th-century neoclassical church with a magnificent polychrome marble altar. As a recurring part of the local annual calendar, the Stella Maris festival takes place every year on the third Sunday in July. It lasts three days and culminates in a procession at sea. For your travel planning, this creates a contrast between permanently visible architectural history and a festival date with a clearly defined time frame.
The former tobacco factory
The former tobacco factory is also part of Tortolì’s history. It was founded in the early 1920s by Bishop Virgilio of Tortolì to provide permanent employment for young women with limited professional opportunities. Until the 1960s, this building was the local tobacco factory. The historic site thus points both to the establishment of the workplace and to its former function over several decades.
Culurgiones and choosing your accommodation
Handmade culurgiones are part of the local culinary offering in Tortolì and Arbatax. Together with the coastal landscapes, natural features and archaeological sites, they create a diverse picture of the destination. A holiday apartment or holiday home in Tortoli can therefore be chosen according to your personal interests: the key consideration is whether you would like to combine your holiday primarily with coastal observations, cultural history, nature walks, a cycling stage or regional specialities.
