Maracalagonis between coast and culture

Baccu Mandara is a coastal district through which the area of Maracalagonis extends to the sea. Part of the coastal district of Torre delle Stelle also belongs to the area of Maracalagonis. These two coastal districts provide two specific reference points for the town's location by the sea.

The ancient remains in Maracalagonis include the village of Cann'e Sisa. The Sette Fratelli massif frames Maracalagonis. The village and the massif represent two different points of reference: Cann'e Sisa as an ancient remnant, and the Sette Fratelli as the area's scenic backdrop.

Coast, beaches and landscape

Geremeas Beach in the coastal area of Maracalagonis continues as an extension of Kal'e moru Beach. This creates a spatial transition along the shore between Geremeas and Kal'e moru.

The part of the Torre delle Stelle settlement belonging to Maracalagonis also includes Cann'e sisa Beach. The beach lies in a pine forest and is characterised by white sand and crystal-clear sea. On the landward side is the pine forest, while the sand and sea define the beach side. These three elements give the beach a clearly defined natural setting.

Churches and archaeological heritage

The Chiesa di Santa Maria d'Itria has three naves resting on squat reused columns. It also features an original wooden roof made from juniper elements. The church interior thus brings together a three-nave layout, reused columns and original juniper wood.

The Tomba Cuccuru Craboni is an important site for the study of Copper Age burial rituals and the relationships between the Monte Claro culture and the Bonnanaro culture.

The parish church Chiesa parrocchiale della B.V. degli Angeli is also known as Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta and Chiesa di Santo Stefano. It was recognised as a cultural asset of cultural interest on 28 April 2023.

Traditions, sweets and poetry

The older type of housing in Maracalagonis is the typical Campidano courtyard house. This architectural form leads from the churches and archaeological sites to another part of the area's history: traditional housing.

The Lollas are regarded in Maracalagonis as symbols of local culture and tradition. A fixed date in the local tradition is Candlemas on 2 February. During the solemn Mass, two girls known as patronesses or “is priorisseddas” present a pair of turtle doves and the infant Jesus. The custom connects 2 February with a solemn Mass and the presentation of turtle doves and the infant Jesus.

Maracalagonis is also known for the artisanal production of typical sweets. This artisanal production represents a distinct culinary aspect alongside the traditions of festivals and poetry.

Marese poetry includes improvised poetry competitions and cantate in the 19th century, as well as muteti and sonnets in the 20th century.
