La Fossa is regarded as a symbol of Bianzè and is also an important sanitary and architectural structure. It is a seven-metre-deep ditch with 36 natural springs and surrounds the centre of Bianzè. La Fossa is also certified as the largest urban fontanile in the Province of Vercelli. As a result, a single feature of the town represents both its wetland landscape and the distinctive character of Bianzè’s built environment.
Churches and palaces with their own character
The parish church of Sant’Eusebio has a late Romanesque bell tower. It houses a painting of the Madonna with two bishops attributed to Lanino; the church also contains various wooden works from the 18th century. Other buildings complete this picture. The church of Santa Maria dei Tabbi dates from the 17th century, as does the Palazzo Municipale. The palace known as the Castello also dates from the 17th century. Bianzè has been documented since 1152: the 1152 charter of Frederick Barbarossa confirms the ownership of Lucedio Abbey. The town’s history thus extends from a medieval document to the surviving buildings of the early modern period.
