The historic town centre of Oulx contains an open-air museum with an important series of works associated with Piedmontese figurative art. On the edge of Oulx’s Borgo Vecchio stands the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta on a hill. Inside the church is a monumental three-part high altarpiece made of painted and gilded wood, created by Jacques Jesse of Embrun between 1670 and 1676. The church is particularly appealing to visitors who wish to appreciate sacred spaces and historic wood art together.

On Piazza Garambois in the Borgo Inferiore stands a fountain dating from 1531, with a square basin and a column with four outlets. The fountain on Via Des Ambrois stands beneath a high portico. It has a column with five outlets and a square basin bearing the year 1504. This is considered the oldest identifiable date on a fountain in the upper valley. Together, the two fountains provide specific historic points of interest on a tour of the town.

Paths, Towers and Public Places

The Des-Ambrois trail opened in 2011. It passes places that shaped the life of Minister Des Ambrois, Oulx’s most famous citizen, and includes ten stops. With its stations, it is ideal for an exploration that combines local history with the biography of this figure. The Torre Delfinale was built between 1350 and 1370 and probably served a residential rather than a military purpose. Jardin d’la Tour is a public park.

Traditions and Regional Products

The Fiera Franca originated in 1494 and is held in Oulx every year during the final days of summer, starting on 15 September. It brings together communities from the Dauphiné, the Dora Valley, Pragelatese and Briançon area. At its stalls, you can taste and buy regional products from the valleys. For a stay focused on regional culture and flavours, this festival offers a particularly tangible experience.

The communal bakery, restored in 2001, is still used for various festive occasions, including 20 January, the feast day of Saint Sebastian, patron saint of Viérë. The bakery is therefore one of the specific places where Oulx’s festival culture can be experienced.

Nature Experience at Lago Verde

Sport fishing for trout is possible at Lago Verde; the lake is equipped for this purpose and equipment can be rented. This appeals to travellers who wish to add a clearly defined activity to their stay.

Oulx can be reached via the A32 Torino–Fréjus motorway, using the Oulx exit, or via the SS 24 del Monginevro state road. Oulx railway station is an international stop on the Torino–Bardonecchia railway line; TGV trains to France also stop there.
