Holiday Apartment in Condove: Culture and Mountain History
In the centre of Condove stands the Chiesa di San Rocco, a Romanesque church dating from the 12th century. It is accessible by car, and there are public parking spaces beside the building. Excavations uncovered fragments of frescoes on the triumphal arch and in the old apse, which experts consider possibly the oldest surviving frescoes in the Susa Valley. The Cappella di San Bernardo features a 15th-century fresco cycle; a Gothic dedication dates the complex to 1430. The Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Saturnino was built in the 18th century and is a Baroque church preserved unchanged according to a design by Giuseppe Giacinto Morari.
History is also evident in the ruins of the Castello del Conte Verde (Castrum Capriarum). They stand on a hill overlooking the entrance to the valley between Caprie and Condove and are accessible from the SS24 state road. A few metres away, there is a car park and a short uphill walk. The Castello is explicitly documented from the 13th century onwards; at that time, it was the centre of a monastic castellany belonging to San Giusto di Susa, as well as the seat of a court and a prison. The rock carvings include a site in Località Buia on a boulder measuring 375 × 220 × 90 cm and the serpentinite block “Roccia degli Asterischi” at the Siliodo–Camporossetto site.
Alpine Sites, Museums and Regional Festivals
In Mocchie, the “La Ghindana” Ethnographic Museum focuses on the material culture representing a mountain community in this area. The museum specialises in dairy farming and alpine pasture farming; mining is documented in the Gravio Valley from the 14th to the 19th century. Also in Mocchie, the 14th-century Campanile Romanico stands in the cemetery. It is slightly tilted because the ground beneath it has subsided, stands beside the cemetery and is easily accessible from the provincial road.
The Santuario Madonna degli Angeli is an Alpine sanctuary at an altitude of 1,880 metres on the Colle del Colombardo and is particularly a destination for pilgrims during the Feast of the Madonna. The Museo Valsusino della Resistenza is housed in the historic rooms of the former Officine Moncenisio. In a library and media library, it preserves original memorabilia, historical finds and photographic records from the wartime period and the period immediately after the arrival of the Allied troops. Guided tours for groups are organised by prior reservation; educational programmes are available for schools.
Regional specialities and event days can also be included in your plans. The Fiera della Toma presents typical products, wines, honey, artisan bread, pastries and confectionery as part of the “GustoValsusa” food and wine event series. The Sagra della Patata in Mocchie is a two-day event held on the first weekend of September, featuring a market for agricultural and handcrafted products, sports events, exhibitions and guided hikes.
