Holiday apartment in Cavour: Rocca, history and Piedmontese culture
Accommodation in Cavour
Cavour combines a striking natural landscape with an unusually rich history. The Rocca di Cavour dominates the Pinerolo plain, while Museo Caburrum, Abbazia Santa Maria and historic buildings offer different ways to explore the past. Those planning a holiday apartment in Cavour will find plenty of opportunities for active, cultural and food-focused days away.
Nature at the Rocca di Cavour
The Rocca di Cavour is an isolated rocky ridge in the Pinerolo plain and reaches a height of 462 metres. Around 400 plant species have been recorded there, including some that are very rare in Piedmont. The Rocca is also designated as a Special Area of Conservation (ZSC). Nature enthusiasts therefore encounter a clearly defined landscape with remarkable botanical diversity.
The summit of the Rocca di Cavour can be reached on foot from the town in 15 to 20 minutes. The Itinerario Naturalistico follows the road along the Rocca to Abbazia Santa Maria. This makes it possible to combine natural and cultural themes when planning locally, without presenting the different destinations as one circular route.
Museum, abbey and historic sites
Museo Caburrum displays archaeological finds from the Cavour area and explains the prehistoric and historic human settlement of the Rocca and the surrounding plain. On the ground floor, the museum has a room dedicated to the Roman municipium Forum Vibii Caburrum. The exhibition therefore spans the period from the earliest traces of settlement to the town's Roman history.
Abbazia Santa Maria is an important Benedictine architectural monument of the High Romanesque period in the Rocca di Cavour nature park. Its Landolfian crypt houses the oldest altar in Piedmont. The complex also includes a permanent painting exhibition featuring works by Maria Magnano, an artist from Cavour. Sacred architecture, regional art and a long history stand side by side here.
Casa Savoia/Racconigi is also known as Casa degli Acaia. The Peace of Cavour was signed in this building in 1561. The peace recognised the Waldensians' physical existence and defined the boundaries of the area in which they were permitted to live and preach.
The Ala Comunale was built in 1583 and was known by the names “alla pubblica”, “bancaria del mercato” and “tettoia per il mercato dei cereali”. In the 18th century, it was referred to as the “Pietra della raggione”; auctions, municipal deliberations and public sales took place there. Chiesa di San Lorenzo has a distinctive wooden coffered ceiling with gilded rosettes.
Events throughout the year
The events calendar also has its own highlights: Cavour Carne di razza piemontese takes place every year in April, and Tuttomele every year in November. These two dates complement the natural and cultural attractions with recurring events throughout the year.
Which type of accommodation suits your plans
Whether you prefer a holiday apartment in Cavour or a holiday home as the base for your stay, you can plan your days around nature, culture or the two annual events. The Rocca provides the nature-focused highlight, with a summit that can be reached on foot from the town in 15 to 20 minutes. Museo Caburrum, Abbazia Santa Maria, Casa Savoia/Racconigi, Ala Comunale and Chiesa di San Lorenzo, by contrast, offer different historical points of interest. This allows you to base your accommodation choice on your own interests and the pace you want for your days.
