Craft Tradition and Sacred Art

Alpette was formerly known as “terra dei mastri ramai”, meaning “land of the coppersmiths”. The nickname refers to the fact that copperworking was a local tradition there. This connection between the place and its craft gives the exploration of Alpette a distinctive historical character.

Its sacred architecture includes the Cappella della Madonna della neve. It was built in 1883 by the family of Seren Piocca Giacomo and Giovanna. Its façade is decorated with frescoes of Saints San Francesco, San Giacomo and Sant'Agostino. It therefore provides a concrete example of the religious art you can discover in Alpette.

The Chiesa dell'Immacolata also preserves remarkable details. The church contains an icon from the second half of the 17th century depicting the Immaculate Virgin. The loggia is decorated with frescoes of Saints San Pietro and San Giuseppe. Both elements draw attention to different forms of sacred design, without requiring you to limit yourself to a single sight.

The Cappella di San Rocco was built in honour of San Rocco after the plague of 1523 and probably dates from the 16th century. The “pane della carità” is still distributed at the chapel today. Another religious reference can be found in the Chiesa di San Giacomo, where celebrations in honour of San Giacomo take place on 25 July.

The Polo Astronomico “Don Giovanni Capace” adds another area of interest. The facility consists of an observatory and a planetarium, complementing the historical and religious sites with a view of the starry sky.

Trails, Mountain Destinations and Picnic Areas

For hikes, the former network of trails around Borgata Trione provides a concrete point of reference. Part of this network continues to be used for walking. In 2014, Borgata Trione was recognised by UNCEM PIEMONTE as an authentic mountain village. In this way, the hiking perspective combines with a place whose character is also shaped by its organically developed settlement form.

A clear destination for an active day is Monte Soglio. The mountain reaches 1,971 metres and can be reached on foot from Alpette in approximately three hours.

On the way to Cima Mares lies the Cappella votiva della Madonna del Pilone. It was built in 1954 by the local population. Cima Mares is the highest point of the mountain above Alpette and lies at 1,570 metres above sea level. The chapel and mountain destination therefore represent both religious remembrance and a hiking route in the surrounding area.

Alpette also has six equipped picnic areas.
