Holiday apartment in Valpone – culture, winegrowing and history

Valpone combines religious heritage, winegrowing and a multifaceted history. A section of the Canale–Valpone loop route also runs through the hamlet. Its thematic scope ranges from sacred dedications and memorial sites to winegrowing, spring culture and a cycling and walking section.

Religious traces and history

Valpone’s religious heritage includes the Chapel of Maria Immacolata, the Chapel of San Defendente and the Chapel of Madonna del Carmine. The parish of Valpone is dedicated to Saint Defendente and Madonna del Carmine. The old Church of San Defendente, located on the hill, was replaced in Valpone by a new building; a building dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary was erected in its place. For those interested in culture, the chapels, parish and church building thus remain identifiable as distinct historical subjects.

The historic settlement of Borghetto di Valpone was evacuated and resettled only three centuries later. Another part of the area’s history concerns Piero Bertone (“Rino”). He fell on 27 August 1944 during a Nazi-Fascist raid in Valpone near Canale. The monument to Piero Bertone is located on Via San Defendente in the hamlet of Valpone. Via San Defendente gives the commemoration of Piero Bertone a specific local connection.

Winegrowing and local tradition

The Valpone vineyard faces fully south. It is credited with a microclimate suitable for grape ripening, and the soil contains a proportion of sand. The Barbero company is part of the winegrowing tradition. It was established towards the end of the 19th century in a small farmhouse in San Grato di Valpone, a hamlet of Canale. For those interested in wine, Valpone thus combines observing a vineyard with the history of Barbero.

For Saturday, 9 May 2026, the first edition of “Cantè Magg – Festa di primavera” had been announced in the hamlet of Valpone in Canale. It was a spring festival centred on fertility and the renewal of nature. Mixed grilled meats and asparagus with egg were planned for Cantè Magg 2026.

Canale–Valpone loop route

The Canale–Valpone loop route turns right after reaching the hamlet of Valpone. It then runs for around 800 metres along a shared cycling and walking path. This distance explicitly refers to this section and not to the entire loop route. In the hamlet of Valpone, the loop route also reaches the Canale–San Damiano provincial road. For a cycling or walking section, this stretch can be planned as a separate stage with the approximate distance. The right-hand bend comes before the shared path; the provincial road follows afterwards in the sequence described.
