Holiday Apartment in Roe: Discover Trails, Mountains and Culture
Your stay in Roe opens up a destination that combines trails, mountain views and traces of cultural history. In Paesana, historic paths lead to the watermill, a sanctuary and districts with histories of their own. Along the Po, there is an easy circular walk, while Monviso and several nearby peaks provide the scenic backdrop. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Roe can therefore combine different day plans: peaceful nature observation, discoveries of cultural history and longer mountain tours.
Holiday apartment in Roe amid mill trails and local history
A distinctive experience is the Via del Mulino in Paesana, which was created around the watermill in the Croesio district. The mill’s mechanisms and water channel have been restored, and the mill has been put back into operation. The Via del Mulino also leads to the Santuario Madonna dell’Oriente, which for centuries was associated with local farmers’ prayers for rain. The route thus combines technological history and religious tradition, without requiring you to focus on just one type of excursion.
Other trails tell stories of the work and everyday life of earlier generations. Tra funghi e castagni in Paesana is a shady forest path that meets the old Via del Sale near the Sant’Anna chapel in the Erasca district. Le Vie Delle Fabbricanti follows paths used daily for decades by the women of the local textile mill and leads towards the Erasca district with views of Monviso. The Via del Forno runs along an old unpaved road; its name recalls a former bakery near the Erasca district.
Nature along the Po and views of Monviso
The Riserva Naturale di Paesana offers an easy circular walk of approximately 2.5 kilometres along the Po. The route passes through riverside vegetation and permanent grassland, providing a quieter contrast to the historic trails and mountain tours. From the Fontanone viewpoint, there are views of Monviso and the Alpine arc. The viewpoint can be reached from Baita Pian Croesio in about 15 minutes. Agliasco, also within the municipality of Paesana, lies in a hollow from which Monviso is visible.
In the vicinity of Roe is Cima Bracco, a peak. The surrounding area also includes Briccas, a peak, Monte Frioland, a mountain, and Punta Trento, a peak. These different landscape features complement the easier walking paths with distinctive destinations for visitors who want to include mountain forms and distant views in their day plans.
Winter day, marked trails and longer tours
The small Pian Munè ski resort offers up to 16 kilometres of downhill runs across two facilities, as well as a practice area with two conveyor belts. For hiking, the Paesana trail network uses Via del Sale signposts and horizontal white-and-red markings. One longer route leads from Pian Munè to Testa di Garitta Nuova via a mule track to Pian Croesio and then along the ridge to the summit; the walking time is approximately two and a half hours. The Passeggiata S. Maria, by contrast, is an approximately two-hour panoramic walk with around 135 metres of elevation gain.
Rock carvings and special cultural sites
Near Pian Munè lies the Bric Lombatera archaeological site, with rock carvings and cup-mark motifs dating to the Iron Age, the first millennium BC. The activities of the Migrans project at Bric Lombatera are carried out by staff from Parco del Monviso and are open to interested people and volunteer birdwatchers without prior registration. For the educational activity of Parco del Monviso, Bric Lombatera can alternatively be used as the starting area; in that case, the starting point is the forecourt of the Pian Munè mountain hut. In 2026, the project will take place at Bric Lombatera for the 29th time.
Historical traces also shape the surrounding area. Within the municipality of Paesana, a former castle stood above the road to Pian Croesio; only its foundations remain. In the Calcinere district stands the Chiesa di Sant’Antonio Abate, a 19th-century church dedicated to Saint Anthony the Abbot. Castello di Bagnolo, a castle, is located in the vicinity of Roe. The Palazzo Roletto, Palazzo Ricca di Castelvecchio and Palazzo Cacherano, each a palace, are also located there. According to local tradition, King Desiderius found refuge in the Ghisola district of Paesana; possible traces of his stay are still believed to exist there.
