Rocche, forests and orientation

Since 2003, Pocapaglia has been part of the Zona di salvaguardia dei boschi e delle rocche del Roero. Forests cover around one third of the municipal area and include mixed deciduous forests, chestnut groves and Scots pine forests. The S1 trail passes through the hamlets of America dei Boschi and Saliceto in Pocapaglia and then reaches Pocapaglia. There are views of the Rocche and the castle towering above the town. In the historic center, there is an electric bicycle charging station near the sports facilities.

History reflected in the townscape

Pocapaglia Castle was first mentioned in 998 in a document issued by Emperor Otto III. Around the middle of the 14th century, it was rebuilt after the French army had severely damaged it. Particularly rich in detail is the carved portal made of light-colored stone: It depicts armor, weapons, arrows, quivers, drums, a shield and a grotesque face. Filippo Juvarra is said to have drawn inspiration from it for the interior door frames of Palazzo Madama. The parish church of Santi Giorgio e Donato was built between 1663 and 1666, restored at the beginning of the 19th century and reconsecrated in 1804. The Confraternita di Sant'Agostino was rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1742 and partly constructed using reused materials from the older building.

Hiking ideas for different days

The Sentiero della Masca Micilina begins at the parish church of Santi Giorgio e Donato, follows Pocapaglia's main road and passes the church of Sant'Agostino and the castle. The easy hiking trail is 4.5 kilometers long and climbs 160 meters in elevation. The Sentiero della Rocca Creusa is a 4-kilometer family trail with 150 meters of elevation gain. It runs 70 percent through natural areas and 30 percent along paved paths, and also passes along a particularly impressive Rocche amphitheater. In the wooded surroundings lies the cave where the legendary hermit is said to have lived. Another family route is the Sentiero botanico della Verna, which covers 4.8 kilometers with 90 meters of elevation gain; 70 percent leads through nature and 30 percent along roads. The different distances and elevation gains make it easier to compare the trails when planning your day.

Culture and practical planning

The “Rocche e Masche” Museum presents local traditions, historic crafts, and the history and legends of Pocapaglia, including the story of Masca Micillina. It is open on the first Sunday of March, April, May, June, July, September, October and November, from 2:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Visits are guided by volunteers; groups can arrange an opening by booking in advance.
